The Situation

With Lilly Miller

Radio Shift

Lilly Miller
Saturday, February 12th, 2011

I sat in my bed, wrapped around my body pillow. All I wanted to do was sleep, but I kept my eyes open as I watched TV on my computer.

It was Thursday night, and like every Thursday last year, I was awaiting the clock to strike midnight, for my radio shift.

Last year I thought being a DJ at night would be cool. This year I knew better. But it didn’t make a difference, because my schedule didn’t fit any daytime shifts.

So once again, from 12 a.m. until 2 a.m. on Friday mornings, I sit by myself in the basement of the Park School building, playing music to the infinite abyss of cyberspace.

I know. I should quit if I don’t enjoy it. But the thing is, I do. Other than staying up so late and walking there when it’s below freezing outside, it’s fun. I get to experience Park when there is no one else there; the quietness transitioned from spooky to enticing sometime last year.

This passed week was my first shift of the semester. I was tempted to stroll the hallways a bit, but the fact that I was DJing prevented me from doing so.

Another part of DJing Thursday-going-into-Friday is that I get to see who doesn’t go out. I talk to my friends who are sick or have a test or for whatever reason are staying in. Mostly it’s people I don’t normally talk to, and I like to think of it as the time we catch up over the strangeness of not going out.
