In game one, the Blue and Gold received an excellent starting pitching performance from powerful left-hander senior Shane Wolf. Wolf through a complete game shutout, striking out 10 and only giving up five hits and no walks in the 3–0 win.
Senior right fielder Rob Raux hit his fifth home run of the season and a triple in the win.
Game two saw more lights-out pitching. This time it was the 6-foot-5 inch right-hander Pete MacDaniel on the mound for the Bombers. MacDaniel went five innings shutting out the Tigers to lead the Blue and Gold to the 12–0 win. MacDaniel said his ability to locate his fastball helped him in the win.
“I had good control of my fastball,” MacDaniel said. “It was easy to spot for me. It’s been a consistent pitch. If my changeup or slider are inconsistent or off … I can go to my fastball.”
The South Hill squad came up strong at the plate scoring nine runs in the second inning and two in the third. Matt Samela hit a two-run homer into the wind to left field to go along with his three hit and three RBI day. Samela said he had not been swinging the bat well prior to his homer.
“I wasn’t swinging the bat well earlier in the day,” Samela said. “I made a minor adjustment and got a pitch to hit and was able to drive it.”
Freshman third baseman David Ahonen had a three hit day, increasing his team leading batting average to .521 and his hit total to 38.
Junior catcher Drew Ash also had three hits on the day with a double and two runs scored.
Having won 15 games in a row and remaining undefeated in conference play has the South Hill squad feeling confident as it approaches the home stretch of the season.
“It gets everybody to feel a lot better about themselves,” Head Coach George Valesente said. “Winning is great because all the guys are having fun and if you work hard and have fun that’s great.”
The next game for the Bombers is at 1 p.m. tomorrow in another doubleheader against RIT at Freeman Field.
