The first pair of games was relocated from Utica, N.Y., to Rome, N.Y., but the relocation did not stop the Bombers.
In the first game, Utica jumped out in front with one run in the second inning and held the lead until the sixth when sophomore David Ahonen hit a solo home run to tie the game.
Tied at one in the final inning, the Blue and Gold scored 11 runs to put the Pioneers out of reach. Every hitter in the Bombers’ starting lineup had at least one hit in the first game.
Senior righthander Pete MacDaniel picked up his fourth complete game as he improved to a perfect 6–0 on the season.
In the second game, the Bombers capitalized on the Pioneers’ mistakes, scoring only three earned rusn, but pulled off the 6–2 win. To open the game, seniors Matt Samela and Kurt Bednarcyk both reached base on a hit by pitch. They then advanced to second and third on a wild pitch and eventually scored to take an early 2–0.
Sophomore righthander Aaron Sapp also stayed perfect, improving to 4–0 on the season. Sapp pitched 6 2/3 innings and held the Pioneers to only two runs. Freshman Tucker Healy held Utica off by striking out the final batter and conserving the sweep in the first doubleheader.
In the first game of the second doubleheader, knotted at one in the seventh, the South Hill squad manufactured a pair of runs. Samela and Bednarcyk opened the inning with back-to-back doubles. Bednarcyk later stole third and scored on a sacrifice fly from Ahonen.
Junior Tom Fishback picked up his third and the team’s ninth complete game to improve to 4–3 on the season.
Wrapping up the weekend, the Blue and Gold scored all nine of their runs in the first three innings of the final game to win 9–4. Their biggest inning came in the third when they tacked on six runs. Freshman Conor Thompson hit an RBI single and Ahonen and sophomore Matt Streich both hit run-scoring doubles in the inning.
Sophomore Dan Lynch improved to 3–2 on the season, putting all of the Bombers’ starters back above .500.
The South Hill squad returns to action at 4 p.m. Wednesday as they take on non-conference rival SUNY-Cortland at Freeman Field.
