Bombers bounce back with win over Frostburg
Staff Writer |
After a six hour bus ride to Frostburg, Md., the football team came back from a disheartening loss against St. John Fisher College last week to defeat winless Frostburg State University 20–10 yesterday to up its record to 5–2.

Grastorf deleted all memories of the 40–17 Fisher loss right away by hitting junior wide receiver Dan Ruffrage for a six-yard touchdown pass on the first drive of the game.

Then, early in the second quarter, he found another one of his weapons, junior wide receiver Thomas Vossler for a nine-yard touchdown completion.

However, sophomore kicker Andrew Rogowski was unsuccessful on one of his two extra point attempts, giving the Blue and Gold 13 points rather than 14.

Even though the South Hill squad had a somewhat good offensive first half, the second half saw them almost cough up the lead.

With the score at 13–10 early in the fourth quarter, Frostburg State intercepted a Grastorf pass in Bomber territory, but the Blue and Gold defense became a brick wall.

Senior defensive tackle Joe Goetz tackled the Bobcat running back for a loss, then the Bombers’ defense forced three incomplete passes to stop the Bobcat run and give momentum back to the South Hill squad.

Then, a methodical 14-play, 71-yard drive in a time span of seven minutes led to a junior tight end Dan Higgins 10-yard touchdown reception to seal the deal at 20–10.

Grastorf now has 17 touchdown passes on the season and Vossler’s six receptions upped him to 15th in the program’s all-time list with 78.

Three Ithaca defenders, junior strong safety David Ahonen, junior linebacker Eric Toporoff and senior defensive end and tri-captain Adam Drescher, recorded seven tackles on the day. Drescher also had a career-high two sacks.

Another positive for the Bombers was the start for graduate student linebacker and tri-captain Matt Scalice, who at one point was speculated to be out with a season-ending injury. He had four tackles, moving him to sixth all-time in Bombers’ history with 291. He is nine short of fifth.

Next week, the Blue and Gold have a bye. They return to the gridiron at 2 p.m. Oct. 31 at Springfield College.
