Sep 4, 2008 | Last November, the football team saw its season end at the hands of Mount Union College — Division III football’s unconquerable Goliath. The Purple Raiders, winners of five of the last eight national championships, hadn’t trailed a single minute all season and boasted a scoring ratio of 542-24. The odds were bleak, at best. Despite a promising opening drive and scoring the most points the pride of Alliance, Ohio had allowed all year, the Bombers ultimately fell 42–18.

Be careful what you wish for.

The old saying sums up the national sentiment toward Ithaca College’s improbable NCAA playoff berth. The Bombers hoped a Cortaca Jug victory would be the hand that rescued them from the postseason precipice. Now that their wish has come true, the Blue and Gold face Mount Union College, winner of eight of the last 11 Stagg Bowls.
