School of Music never disappoints

It never ceases to amaze me concerning the high quality of the School of Music at Ithaca College. We’ve never been to a bad concert, and just a year ago had the honor of traveling with Professor Steve Peterson and his wonderful wind ensemble to Ireland. I just finished hearing three wonderful concerts on consecutive days (March 16, 17, 18), and each was a special treat in its own way. On Sunday afternoon, the School of Music was the host to trombone troupes from Penn State and the Eastman School of Music, along with the IC Trombone Troupe made up of students from all parts of campus. Maestro Erik Kibelsbeck did an excellent job in blending the sound of the Bomber Bones, and excelled on the organ, when all three schools combined talents for the finale. On Monday night, Ford Hall was the scene of a wonderful concert by the Ithaca College Choir under the able direction of Professor Lawrence Doebler. It’s hard to find better voices than what we heard on Monday night. The three-day concert gig came to a climax on Tuesday evening at the Hockett Family Recital Hall with the faculty trumpet recital of Frank Campos who presents a rich sound with tremendous range and articulation. While there were many top-shelf highlights of the evening from Professor Campos, Josh Oxford’s group demonstrated a large variety of talents that you could only find at a school like Ithaca College. Listening to Professor Steve Brown play guitar in his final faculty concert, along with Campos and bassist Nicholas Walker, was a special treat, as he will retire from the School of Music after 30 years of service to his alma mater. It’s special moments like this that make Ithaca a wonderful place to call your home.
