Blue and Gold advance at invitational and pentathlon

The men’s indoor track and field team continued their success in competition at the Marc Deneault Invitational at Cornell University Saturday, with four athletes qualifying for the Eastern College Athletic Conference Championships.

Freshmen Chris Mastrosimone and Jeffrey Willis set the tone early on for the Bombers, both recording second-place finishes and qualifying for the ECAC Championships. Mastrosimone placed second in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.66, and Willis cleared 4.50 meters in the pole vault to finish second in the event.

In the 400-meter dash, junior Max Orenstein posted a time of 50.69, placing third overall and qualifying for ECACs.

The Bombers 3,200-meter relay team of seniors Curt Bell and Bill Way, sophomore Brian McCormick and freshman Billy Savage also qualified for nationals, recording a time of 8:03.92 and overall finishing second.

The Blue and Gold had eight other athletes place in the top-10 in their respective events at the meet. Senior Andrew Brown vaulted 4.35 meters to finish third in the pole vault, sophomore Travis Johnson places fourth in the triple jump at 12.55 meters, and junior Chris Stahlmann cleared 1.89 meters to finish fifth in the high jump.

Senior Joel Trager finished seventh in the 500-meter dash with a time of 1:09.18, senior Scott Walker placed eighth in the mile run at 4:31.31 and freshman Christopher Parlett ran a time of 1:30.11 in the 600-meter dash to finish eighth in the event.

The 1,600-meter relay team of Trager, junior Aaron Catlin, freshmen David Geary and Matt Kastler ran to a sixth-place finish with a time of 3:38.71.

The Bombers opened and hosted the New York State Collegiate Track Conference meet with the state pentathlon at Cornell University’s Barton Hall Sunday.

At the pentathlon, sophomores Doug Koury and Dan Moloney received all-state honors by placing four and eighth, respectively.

Koury scored a total of 3,130 points, and finished with the top score in the field in the high jump, clearing 1.95 meters to score 758 points in the event. Koury also finished with the top mark in the 1,00-meter run, totaling 814 points with his time of 2L45.41. In the long jump, Koury finished in second-place, recording a distance of 6.25 meters for 641 points.

Moloney edged out the ninth-place finisher by 11 points, to finish eighth with 2,974 total points and earn a point for the Bombers.

The Blue and Gold had three other athletes competing in the pentathlon, with freshman Alec Svoboda placing 10th, freshman Rad Arrindell in 11th and junior Ryan Taylor finishing 12th.

The points that Koury and Moloney scored will carry over to the main portion of the NYSCTC meet on Feb. 26 and Feb. 27 at Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester, N.Y.
