Bombers finish third at states

The men’s indoor track and field team scored 125.75 points and finished third overall Saturday at the New York State Collegiate Track Conference Championships in Rochester, N.Y.

The Bombers saw two school records fall at the meet, with junior Max Orenstein breaking his teammate junior Jeff Wetmore’s record of 22.62 in the 200-meter dash with Orenstein running a new record time of 22.28 to win the event. Senior Andrew Brown also set a new mark in the pole-vault, provisionally qualifying for the NCAA Championships and breaking freshman Jeff Willis’s record of 4.65 that Willis set earlier this season, clearing 4.70 meters and finishing third.

Orenstein also posted a winning time of 6.56 in the 55-meter dash and was named the Track Athlete of the Year.

Wetmore placed third in the 200 and qualified for the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships with his time of 22.72. Wetmore also finished fourth in the 55 with a time of 6.71. Freshman Chris Mastrosimone earned all-state honors in the 200, finishing seventh overall with a time of 23.14.

Orenstein, Wetmore and Mastrosimone and sophomore Doug Koury formed Ithaca’s 1,600-meter relay team. The team won the event in a time of 3:22.52 and qualified for the ECACs.

In the pole vault, Willis placed fourth overall by clearing 4.40 meters.

Koury won the 400-meter dash with an ECAC-qualifying time of 50.22. Junior Ryan Taylor received all-state honors in the 400, placing eighth overall with a time of 52.58.

The Blue and Gold saw three other athletes receive all-NYSCTC honors, with senior Scott Walker placing seventh in the mile run (4:29.75), freshman David Geary in the 800-meter run (1:58.62) and sophomore Brian McCormick finishing seventh in the 1,000-meter run in 2:35.91.

The Bombers’ 3,200-meter relay team of Geary, junior Aaron Catlin and freshmen Chris Reilly and Billy Savage placed sixth overall with a time of 8:16.12.

Sophomore Travis Johnson finished third in the triple jump, leaping 12.98 meters.

The Blue and Gold will see its next action Friday and Saturday at the ECAC Championships in Northampton, Mass.
