Bombers win first ECAC title

The men’s track and field team won it’s first Eastern College Athletic Conference title Saturday at Smith College in Northampton, Mass. The Bombers scored 36.25 points on the second day of competition, to overtake four teams and finish 4.25 points higher than second-place finisher The College of New Jersey.

On Friday, the Blue and Gold recorded 16 points, with the relay team of juniors Max Orenstein and Jeff Wetmore, sophomore Doug Koury and freshman Chris Mastrosimone setting the tone. The relay squad finished just off the school record they set the previous week, posting a time of 1:29.66.

Orenstein ran a time of 6.57 in the 55-meter dash preliminaries and qualified for Sunday’s final.

In the pole vault, both senior Andrew Brown and freshman Jeffery Willis earned all-ECAC honors, both clearing 4.67 meters. Willis set a new personal best in the event and finished sixth overall. Brown finished in seventh. Both athletes are ranked in the top-30 in the nation and have provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championships.

The Bombers’ distance medley relay team of sophomore Brian McCormick, junior Ray Taylor, freshman David Geary and senior Curt Bell ran a time of 10:19.23 and placed eighth overall.

On Saturday, Orenstein once again set the pace for the Bombers, breaking his own record (22.28) in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.22 to finish second overall.

Wetmore and Mastrosimone also received all-ECAC honors in the event. Wetmore ran 22.68 to finish fourth with Mastrosimone coming in seventh in 22.83.

Orenstein placed seventh in the 55-meter dash final, running a time of 6.58.

The Blue and Gold’s 1,600-meter relay team was crowned ECAC champion, posting a time of 3:22.03. The 1,600-meter relay team and the Bombers’ 800-meter relay team, combined for 20 of Ithaca’s 52.25 at the meet.

Bell placed third in the 3,000-meter run, recording a time of 8:42.68, and finished less than two seconds off the winning time.

Junior Chris Stahlmann and Koury were two other Bombers to earn all-ECAC honors. Stahlmann cleared 1.90 meters in the high jump to finish in seventh, while Koury placed sixth in the 400-meter dash with a time of 50.35.

Freshman Billy Savage and McCormick both competed in the 1,000-meter event. Savage posted a time of 2:35.24 to finish 13th overall, while McCormick finished 20th in 2:36.09.

This was the Bombers’ best finish at the ECAC Championships, indoors and outdoors, since finishing fifth in 2001.

The NCAA national championship field will be announced Monday. Junior Kyle Devins has automatically qualified for nationals in the long jump.
