Bombers win overtime thriller against Hartwick
Staff Writer |
After a dominating win against Elmira on April 15, Saturday’s game against Hartwick College was much closer for the No. 4 men’s lacrosse team as they beat the Hawks 8–7 in overtime at Upper Terrace Field.

Junior attackman Nic Heckman scored the game-winning goal in the extra session at the 3:39 mark. It was his second goal of the game and 27 on the season.

The winning play started off with senior defensman Michael Serron forcing a turnover and clearing it so the Bombers could set their offense up. Heckman took the ball, moved in a circular path clockwise around the goalie’s crease and attempted a shot relatively close to the goal. The final result—nothing but net.

Down early, the South Hill squad rallied with a 6–1 run in the second and third quarters to go up 7–4. After scoring his first career goal the game before, sophomore attackman Jay Lucas netted three for the Bombers in this game. Junior midfielder Nick Neuman had two goals for the Bombers and senior midfielder Mike Guinta scored one.

The defense held the opposing team in check once again, with sophomore goalie David Gal making 12 saves, including a key one in overtime. Senior defenseman and tri-captain Neth Wiedemann scooped up six ground balls and forced five turnovers, while sophomore long-stick midfielder Matt Molnar caused a career-high four turnovers.

The win put the bombers record at 13–1 overall and 6–1 in the Empire 8. The Bombers final game of the regular season is at 7 p.m. Saturday against No. 23 Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, N.J.
