Men's squad finishes second in state

The men’s swimming and diving team finished second in the Upper New York State Collegiate Swimming Association and Empire 8 standings at the championship meet Saturday with 1,063 points.
Two school records fell as the Bombers fought to their highest finish at the meet since their first place finish in 2004. Freshman Antoine Connors placed first and set a college record in 100-yard freestyle with a time of 45.91 seconds. Connors claimed the state and conference title in the 50-yard freestyle event.
The Blue and Gold set another school record in the 400-yard freestyle relay. Connors, sophomore Joe Gage, sophomore Steve Croucher, and senior Mike Ariel broke the record and attained an NCAA B qualifying time with their time of 3:06.16.
Freshman diver Derek Rand and sophomore diver Mike Glicini earned all-state status in the 3-meter competition, with Rand placing fourth and Glicini placing eighth.
Empire 8 rival Alfred University placed first in the state and Empire 8 standings with 1,149 points. Rennselaer Polytechnic Institute finished a close third with 1,039 points.
The South Hill squad will compete in the NCAA championships March 18 to 21 in Minneapolis, Minn.
