Squad suffers first loss of season
Staff Writer |
The men’s swimming and diving team lost for the first time this season on Saturday at Division II Bloomsburg University 179–83.

Freshman Christopher Caldwell was the only individual event winner for the Bombers, finishing first in the 500-yard freestyle in 5:08.18.

The 200-yard freestyle relay team composed of freshman Jake Robbins, junior Kramer Jakubek, sophomore Antoine Connors and junior Steve Croucher won with a time of 1:29.28.

Despite winning only two events in the meet, the Bombers held their own against the Division II opponent, placing in five events. Connors finished second in the 100- and 50-yard freestyle with times of 50.04 and 22.49 seconds, respectively.

The South Hill squad faced a major challenge entering the meet because there were no diving events, eliminating one of the Bombers’ strengths. Before the meet, Head Coach Kevin Markwardt said he did not think they could defeat Bloomsburg because there was no diving.

The Blue and Gold stand at 3–1 and return to action at 1 p.m. Saturday when they travel to Geneva, N.Y., to participate in a quad meet hosted by Hamilton College with Hartwick College and SUNY-Geneseo.
