Bombers best in Empire 8 with win over Nazareth

The men’s tennis team clinched the Empire 8 regular season crown, while extending its winning streak to seven with a 9–0 win over Nazareth College on Saturday.

Before the match, Ithaca senior co-captains Andrew Dunnick and Seth Magnani were acknowledged for their contributions this season. Both seniors won their respective competitions, with Magnani winning 7–5, 7–6 (7–0) in sixth singles and Dunnick paired with sophomore Daniel Adelman producing an 8–6 win in third doubles.

Junior Taylor Borda had a strong outing, winning in 6–3, 7–6 (7–2), while sophomore Josh Rifkin remained undefeated, posting a straight set 6–2, 6–0 victory. Freshman Jimmy Newton won in straight sets 6–1, 6–0, with junior Danny Wolk matching his score 6–1, 6–0. Freshman Mike Muraco also won in straight sets 6–1, 6–1.

In doubles competition, the tandem of Borda and Rifkin shutout their opponents 8–0, with Newton and Wolk matching them 8–0 in second doubles.

This win pushes the team’s conference winning streak to 11 matches dating back to 2008, assuring it of being the top seed in the Empire 8 Championship Tournament at St. John Fisher College and Nazareth College on May 2-3.

The next action for the Bombers is at 4:30 p.m. Friday against St. Lawrence University at the Ithaca College Tennis Courts.
