Staff Writer |
The men’s tennis team won for the first time during the spring season 5–4 at St. Lawrence University yesterday.

The nationally ranked doubles team composed of senior captain Taylor Borda and junior Josh Rifkin won the first match of the day 8–1. Sophomore Jimmy Newton and senior captain Daniel Wolk won their doubles match 8–6 to give the Bombers a 2–1 lead heading into singles play.

Borda maintained his momentum in singles play, winning in straight sets 7–5, 6–4. Rifkin followed suit winning 6–3, (5–7), 6–1. Newton’s victory, 7–5, 6–7 (5–7), 6–4, clinched the win for the Bombers.

As the defending Empire 8 conference champions, the Bombers needed this victory to avoid starting out their season 0–2. The team lost their first match of the season 5–4 at the University of Rochester last weekend.

Ithaca returns to action March 15 when it travels to Hilton Head, S.C., to participate in a four-day tournament against Wheaton College, Dickinson College, the College of Wooster and Transylvania University.
