More than 150 students crowded into IC Square last night for Sexfest, an informational fair about sex hosted by the Residence Hall Association. Beginning at 7 p.m., students learned about safe sex and different viewpoints about sexual relations. Other groups who attended were SAFER, REACH, Prism, Spectrum, SGA, IC Feminists and Planned Parenthood.
Twelve tables were set up in IC Square with information, posters and sexual items, such as passion fruit lubricant students could taste, and hands-on condom demonstrations. Decorations included pick-up lines taped to the floor leading to IC Square, mood lighting and popular music playing in the background.Junior Julia Dunn, president of RHA, said she was not expecting the large turnout. She said she thinks many students came to Sexfest this year because there was a different approach compared to last year.
“We’re doing things we’ve never done before this year,” Dunn said. “We’ve invited comedians, gotten a lot more groups involved, and are giving out goody bags.”
Nancy Reynolds, director of health promotion at the Counseling Center, said students should be aware of the risks associated with sex, drinking and partying. She handed out personalized blood alcohol content cards based on weight so that students can be more in control of their behavior when drinking.
Jen Mainville, a Planned Parenthood worker, said she wanted students to feel comfortable talking about sex and asking questions. She said she was happy seeing students take information and condoms. She also said she hopes if students have the right tools, they will make better choices.
Freshman Justina Kofie said she enjoyed the event but felt the crowding became a problem.
“It’s awesome but crowded,” she said. “We definitely need more things like this in the future but maybe in a bigger venue.”
Junior Catherine Kirchhoff, president of Prism, said even though this year’s Sexfest may have been crowded, she was happy with the results.
“Everyone is so interested in sex,” she said. “I had no idea.”
