Distinguished journalist to speak about modern media
Senior Writer |

As part of the Park Distinguished Visitor Series, Arianna Huffington, co-founder and editor in chief of the Huffington Post, will give a lecture titled “The Modern Journalism Paradox: The Best of Times Amidst the Worst of Times,” at 7:30 p.m. tomorrow night in Emerson Suites. The lecture will focus on both the hardships and the potential of modern journalism.

Jeff Cohen, director of the Park Center for Independent Media, said Huffington is one of the most notable speakers the college has seen and is also a major force for change within the media.

“It’s my job at the Park Center for Independent Media to feature and bring to IC the movers and shakers in the independent media,” Cohen said. “There’s no more a compelling and successful mover and shaker than Arianna Huffington.”

Cohen said Huffington plans to discuss the massive changes and upheaval occurring in the media facing today’s journalists.

“Mainstream dailies are in a real crisis and are laying off some really good journalists,” Cohen said. “[But] because of her success at [the] Huffington Post, they’ve been hiring a lot of journalists.”

He expects approximately 800 attendees at the main event, which is sponsored by both the Park Center for Independent Media and the Park Distinguished Visitor Series. Cohen said an invitation-only Q&A event with students from select classes will be held at 3 p.m.
