“I took a wrong turn out of the Bookstore and suddenly I was face to face with this huge, metallic thing,” said Spacey. “I asked somebody what it was and they said, ‘That’s the new School of Business building, man’ and I was like, ‘What? There’s an old one?’”
One of President Peggy R. Williams’ main priorites on campus has been expanding and innovating college facilities and programs through the Capital Campaign, with the ultimate fundraising goal of $115 million. The campaign kicked off on campus last fall with the visit of Disney Chief Executive Officer Bob Iger. His address to campus attracted media attention and was an instrumental step toward achieving the campaign goal.
Spacey said he does not explicitly remember Iger’s visit, but then again, he said last fall was a tough semester for him.
“I was probably in the basement of Park editing my movie for Cinema Production II at the time.” He then added, “I’m sure they would have put up posters or sent out an e-mail if it were really important.”
Several students attempted to prove that the School of Business has indeed existed on campus for many years by showing him its original location, Smiddy Hall. However, Spacey only became more disoriented after seeing that the campus does not, in fact, end at the Dillingham Fountains.
“I guess it makes sense that we have a business school. I mean, that would explain all the people wearing pink polos with popped collars,” said Spacey with a chuckle as he fiddled with the plastic buttons on the suit vest he wore over a white T-shirt.
The Capital Campaign, which upon its completion will back projects from new facilities to better student funding, also carries a mission of bringing the campus community together.
“I’m sure this shiny new building will give everyone a reason to take out their earbuds, put down their coffee mugs and collectively furrow their eyebrows – as a community,” said Spacey.
His new discovery has left Spacey with a desire to explore the city he has called home for the past few years.
