Fans still root for futile teams
|

Boy, the opening week of Major League Baseball sure is exciting, isn’t it? It’s the only time of the season that every team has a chance at going to the World Series. Well, almost. As a Washington Nationals fan, I know the difference between having a chance at winning the World Series and being bat-crap insane.

Though, one could argue it’s also pretty crazy to root for a team that isn’t likely to win more than 60 games this season, but that’s beside the point. The truth is, misery loves company. So I’m comforted by the fact the Nationals share the same Vegas odds to win the World Series as the Kansas City Royals and the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. They’re all long shots at 350:1.

Unlikely as it may seem, the odds of finding other Nationals fans at Ithaca are even worse. A quick Facebook search reveals all of two people who expose their allegiance to the Nats — and they’re both alumni. God, I’m so lonely.

If only there was a Facebook group for Nats fans like there is for Royals fans. Sophomore Matt McLaughlin created the aptly titled “Kansas City Royals Fans” group, and it has a whopping eight members.

“A lot of people joined the group as a joke,” he said. “It’s ... a sympathy gesture more than anything else.”

Spoken like a true realist. But McLaughlin doesn’t root for his team out of sympathy, he’s been a masochist — err, I mean Royals fan — since his dad introduced him to the team and Bo Jackson signed his brother’s glove at Yankee Stadium. But with no hope in sight, why keep coming back?

“Stupid pride and dedication,” he said. “It’s times like these that they need all the support they can get.”

For us, support means hoping our teams can manage to stay under 100 losses this season, something neither the Nats nor the Royals are likely to avoid. That leaves only the Devil Rays. And there are absolutely zero Ithaca students willing to admit allegiance to them.

Well, there is one, but it’s strictly business. Sophomore Dan Fisher works with the Devil Rays’ scouting department and this summer is going to intern in their marketing department. As a Red Sox fan, working with the Devil Rays gives him insight to the world of the bottom feeders.

“The fans in Florida are much different than anywhere else,” Fisher said. “People don’t even know that Major League Baseball exists in Tampa.”

That begs the question: If a team loses 100 games, and nobody cares, did it really happen? Take it from me — it’s hard not to notice.
