Bombers sweep Clarkson

| Contributing Writer

The volleyball team swept Clarkson University in three matches Sept. 30 in the Ben Light Gymnasium, raising its record to 10–9. The win broke a three game losing streak the Bombers suffered at the Empire 8 Crossover at Stevens Institute of Technology.

“We were coming off of a rough weekend and we knew Clarkson was a solid team,” Head Coach Janet Donovan said. “We were hoping to stay positive and focused, which I think really helped us execute.”

Donovan said she was proud of her team’s performance, and junior Jen Heberton’s dominance on the court. Heberton recorded a high of 16 kills, while freshman Jessica Hoeffner racked up seven kills and junior Corinna Doctor had 30 assists.

The matches were all very close, as both teams battled for every point, but the Blue and Gold ultimately came out on top winning 25–17, 25–22 and 25–23. This game brought the Blue and Gold’s all time record against Clarkson to a perfect 24–0.

“Our connection as a whole was much better,” Heberton said. “We stayed positive throughout the entire game, constantly encouraging one another while still being demanding.”

The second set was a struggle, as the teams found themselves at an even score of 20–20. The South Hill squad fought back relentlessly, with two kills a piece by freshman Elizabeth Previte and Heberton backed with strong serving by sophomore Taylor Horton, to guarantee the win.

In the third match, Ithaca showed complete confidence as it yielded a 14–5 lead early in the match. Clarkson rallied, bringing the score up to 24–23. Hoeffner made the victory a reality with her game-winning kill to give the Bomber’s the ultimate victory and sweep.

Although the matches were close, Previte said she was confident her team would pull through.

“We just had to show we wanted it,” she said.
