The women’s indoor track team wrapped up their weekend with freshman Emma Dewart qualifying for the NCAA championships and winning the pentathlon Sunday at the New York State Collegiate Track Conference at Cornell University.

Dewart earned 3,203 points in the event and is now the second Bomber to qualify for nationals this season.

Dewart was the top performer in the high jump as she cleared 1.64 meters to earn 783 points. In the 800-meter run and the long jump, she was the second-best performer as she finished the 800-meter run with a time of 2:32.12 and finished the long jump at 5.17 meters. She posted a third-best performance in the shot put with a throw of 9.01 meters.

Four other Bombers competed in the meet, including senior Lauren Koppel who placed third with 2,991 points to qualify for the Eastern College Athletic Conference Championships. Koppel won the state pentathlon title in 2007 and has earned top-three performances in each of her three attempts at the state championships.

On Saturday, prior to the NYSCTC pentathlon, the Bombers continued their run at breaking college records and qualifying for the ECAC Championships as they competed in the Denault Invitational at Cornell.

“Today’s really about tying up some loose ends before states and trying to bump up some places,” sophomore Marcia McCord said during the meet. “If we bring it together today, that’s a pretty good indicator of how we’re going to perform next weekend.”

McCord broke the college’s record in the 60-meter dash and finished sixth in the preliminaries with a time of 7.93 seconds. She finished second in the 400-meter dash with a time of 58.63 seconds.

Senior Alison Siderko qualified for the ECAC meet and placed fourth in the high jump at 1.60 meters.

In order to perform well in the postseason, the Bombers have started to change up their practices.

“For postseason we’re going to taper and work more on technique in practice, not so much repetition and probably shorter distances,” McCord said.

With the Bombers’ success in the pentathlon, they now have their sights set on the rest of postseason.

“Something big is going to happen,” McCord said. I don’t know what, but people have been bringing down their times lately pretty consistently. They’ve been [setting personal records] a lot lately.”
