Blue and Gold capture state title

The women’s indoor track team finished first at the New York State Collegiate Track Conference Championship yesterday for the first time since 2004 at Rochester Institute of Technology with a team score of 223.5 points.

In a field of nine teams, the Bombers captured eight event championships and a combined 42 individual and relay all-state honors.

Sophomore Marcia McCord led the Bombers with four state titles. She finished first in the 55-meter dash, the 200-meter dash, the long jump and the triple jump.

McCord also qualified for the NCAA Championships in the triple jump and the 55-meter dash.

The Blue and Gold added four other first-place finishes. Senior Lauren Koppel took first in the 55-meter hurdles at 8.67 seconds, sophomore Kate Leugers won the mile run with a time of 5:07.21 and freshman Emma Dewart placed first in the pentathlon, at last week’s meet at Cornell University. The Bombers also claimed first in the distance medley relay.

McCord was named NYSCTC Field Athlete of the Year and Dewart earned the conference Rookie of the Year Award. Head Coach Jennifer Potter also earned the Coach of the Year Award.

The Bombers continue competition at the Eastern College Athletic Conference Championships on Saturday at Tufts University.
