Blue and Gold easily handle Elmira, 21-6

Sophomore Kylie McClure led the Blue and Gold’s offensive attack, setting career highs with five goals and six points. Seven other Bombers scored in the win, led by sophomore Lauren Fitzgerald’s career-high four tallies.
McClure said the Bombers’ offense had no problem with the Elmira defense.
“They played a zone [defense], which I think offensively we picked apart pretty well,” McClure said. “It’s always great to have a win in the Empire 8. After the loss on Monday, we just knew we couldn’t have another loss. We were motivated and ready to play.”
Seniors Meagan Howell and Sarah Knauf each netted three goals, sophomores Kassie Garfield and Krista Fieselmann tallied two scores each, and sophomore Sarah Cox and senior Kim Medla scored once.
Medla said the team’s impressive depth was on display in the win.
“It’s awesome,” Medla said. “It really shows our depth. We can put our bench in and do just as well.”
Senior Emily Brooks continued her steady play in goal, stopping nine shots while only giving up four goals before giving way to sophomore backup goalie Courtney Dowell late in the second half.
With the victory, Head Coach Karen Hollands picked up her 50th career win. But afterwards her focus was squarely on what the team needs to improve on for their two road games this weekend.
“We’re going into a big weekend and we wanted to play well and execute what we wanted to work on, and we were able to do that,” Hollands said. “We were just a little sloppy with some things. Some things we got away with in a game like this, you won’t get away with. Every turnover is a goal for the other team against Fisher and Naz.”
The next game for the women’s lacrosse team will take place at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at St. John Fisher College.
