Bombers upset Herons in final home game
Sports Editor |
The women’s lacrosse team defeated No. 11 William Smith College 16–8 today on Carp Wood Field. With the win the Bombers improve to 7–6 overall.

Senior attack Kim Medla led the Blue and Gold’s offensive attack, setting a career high in goals in the second consecutive game. After scoring six goals, including the game winner, in a 16–15 come-from-behind win against Hartwick College this past Saturday, Medla found the back of the net seven times against the Herons.

Medla’s classmate, attack Meagan Howell, totaled four goals and two assists in the final home game for the Bombers’ six seniors.

“It’s so special,” Medla said. “They’re my best friends [and] the only thing better than playing with them is winning with them.”

Senior Emily Brooks played her strongest game of the season in goal, making 14 saves, including a number of spectacular one-on-one stops. Head Coach Karen Hollands said Brooks’ play sparked the Blue and Gold’s offensive flow.

“Our goalie played unbelievable,” Hollands said. “I mean she just played out of her mind, save after save. And then with those saves we were able to build momentum and that’s what made the difference.”

Ithaca jumped out to an early 4–0 lead, causing William Smith Head Coach Pat Genovese to yank starting senior goalie Morgan Baird. Junior backup Becky Josefiak didn’t fare much better, as the Bombers took a 7–3 lead into halftime.

The Herons scored the first goal of the second half to cut the lead to 7–4, but they would get no closer as the South Hill squad answered each goal with a score of its own.

Junior Becky Bedard tallied a goal and two assists, while seniors Sarah Knauf and Suzy Lull each tallied one assist. Sophomores Kassie Garfield, Kylie McClure, Sarah Cox and Lauren Fitzgerlad each netted one goal for the Bombers as well.

Brooks said the win as the culmination of a great day.

“It was kind of like the perfect day,” Brooks said. “It was beautiful out, we had so many fans, it was our senior day and all our parents were here. It’s really sad that it’s our last game on this field, but as a senior I couldn’t be happier with the turnout.”

The next game for the women’s lacrosse team will take place at noon Saturday in Rochester, N.Y., against Nazareth College in the first round of the Empire 8 Championship Tournament.
