Blue and Gold to send four, possibly five to NCAAs
Staff Writer |

The wrestling team competed in the Empire Collegiate Wrestling Conference (ECWC) Championships Saturday in Oneonta and left with a successful showing.

Ithaca tied SUNY-Cortland with 76.5 points for first place in the team standings. Some of the members of the South Hill squad also did very well individually.

A first-place win in your respective weight class or seizing one of the eight wild-card bids would result in a trip to the NCAA Championships in Cedar Rapids, Iowa in two weeks.

For sophomores Willie Horwath and Jon Gregory and freshmen Blaine Woszczak and David Priest, Cedar Rapids is now in their future.

Horwath, who was seeded first, placed first in the 141-pound division. He posted a 13–3 major decision in the quarterfinals, a 3–2 decision against the fourth seed in the semi-finals and a 9–4 decision in the finals.

Gregory, who wrestled at 125 pounds and was seeded fourth, won in the quarterfinals with a 9–1 major decision and in the semi-finals with a 7–5 decision against the top seed. He lost in the finals, but received a wild-card bid to move onto the NCAAs.

Woszczak, who wrestled at 149 pounds, won in the quarterfinals 8–3 and in the semi-finals 10–3 against the second seed. His second-place finish also got him a wild-card selection.

Priest, who wrestled at 174 pounds and was seeded second, recorded 8–1 wins in both the quarterfinals and semi-finals matches. Along with Gregory and Woszczak, his second-place win awarded him a wild card selection.

This will be the first trip to the NCAA Championships for all four of these Bombers.

Sophomore Chad Winowich, who wrestled at 133 pounds and was seeded third, pinned his quarterfinal counterpart and defeated the number two seed in the semi-final round 6–0. Unfortunately, even though he finished second as well, he was not given a wild-card bid. He was, however, declared the second alternate to attending the NCAA’s.

Another accomplishment of note for members of the Blue and Gold, Woszczak became the second freshman in Bomber history to win 30 matches in a season. His quarterfinal victory got him win No. 30 and the semi-final upset got him win No. 31

Horwath, Gregory, Woszczak, Priest and possibly Winowich will next compete in the NCAA Championships in Cedar Rapids, Iowa on March 7 and 8. Times of the matches are still to be announced.
