On Jan. 9 they participated in the North-South Duals held at Ursinus College in Collegeville, Pa.
In that meet, the Blue and Gold took on four different schools and annihilated each one of them. They defeated Central Connecticut State University 33–12, Messiah College 32–6, No. 19 Wesleyan University 37–4 and shutout McDaniel College 44–0.
Out of 38 total bouts, the South Hill squad only lost five of them.
Junior Blaine Woszczak (149 pounds) was the most dominant for the Bombers in the meet going 4–0 with three major decisions and one pin fall.
A week later, the South Hill squad traveled to Lycoming College in Williamsport, Pa., for the Budd Whitehall National Duals. Once again, they won the whole thing defeating Hunter College 30–12, No. 30 Trine University 31–4, York College 36–12, No. 16 Wilkes Univeristy 29–9 and then No. 7 The College of New Jersey 25–11 for the tournament title.
Woszczak, who is ranked No. 1 in his weight class, was sensational again, going 5–0 in his matches with two pins and a technical fall. Junior David Priest (174 pounds) also went 5–0. He’s ranked sixth in his weight class.
The Bombers wrapped up the break with a fifth-place finish in the New York State Championships at Cornell University yesterday and today. A total of 18 teams varying from Division I, II and III competed in the tournament. The Blue and Gold placed better than any other Division III school.
Five members of the Blue and Gold advanced to today’s championship semifinals, equaling the amount from all of the other Division III schools combined.
Junior Jeremy Stierly (141 pounds) placed the highest out of anyone on the team. He finished third in his weight class.
Three other Bombers finished fourth in their respective classes. They were Priest, Woszczak and senior tri-captain Chad Winowich (133 pounds).
Sophomore Derek Brenon finished fifth at 165 pounds, while sophomore Matt Mahon finished fifth in the heavyweight division and senior tri-captain Joe Goetz was right behind him placing sixth in that class.
The Blue and Gold are 16–0 in dual matches so far this season, which is a school record. They hit the mats again at 1 p.m. Sunday against Division I opponents SUNY-Binghamton and Boston University in Clifton Park, N.Y.
