Staff Writer |
The No. 4 wrestling team’s unbelievable success this season continued to occur over the past two weeks. The Bombers won four out of five dual meets, with one of them coming against a Division I opponent. Their record is now 20–1 in dual meets.

The only loss came to another Division I opponent, Binghamton University, on Jan. 31 in Clifton Park, N.Y.

The Blue and Gold lost 35–3, with their only bout victory coming by way of senior Chad Winowich. The 133-pound tri-captain defeated Tyler Maimberg by a 10–3 decision.

Yet, the South Hill squad quickly rebounded that same day against Division I Boston University by annihilating them 31–6.

Winowich once again won his bout by decision 7–3 and was joined by junior Jeremy Stierly at 141 pounds, senior John Dale at 165 pounds, David Priest at 174 pounds, junior David Sbriscia at 197 pounds and senior Joe Goetz at heavyweight.

Freshman Josue Mendez won by forfeit at 184 and junior Blaine Woszczak, the top ranked wrestler at his 149-pound class, won by major decision.

Three days later on Feb. 3, Ithaca traveled to SUNY-Oneonta and demolished the Red Dragons 42–3. The Blue and Gold won nine of the 10 bouts, with three of the victories coming by pin fall. Seth Ecker at 133 pounds, Dale and sophomore Matt Mahon at heavyweight, pinned their opponents.

The Bombers last two dual matches within the past two weeks had the highest implications in them.

One was against No. 15 Wilkes University on the road and the other No. 16 SUNY-Cortland at home for senior night.

Against Wilkes on Feb. 5, the South Hill squad won 26–10. Head Coach Marty Nichols ’90 made history as he notched his 150th win as Ithaca’s head coach. The win tied him for first all-time in the program with his college coach, Johny Murray.

The Bombers won five bouts by major decision as Winowich, Stierly, Woszczak, senior Willie Horwath and Goetz all crushed their opponents.

Lastly, in this talented senior classes last home dual meet ever, the Blue and Gold beat their archrival Cortland 24–12. Nichols thus became the winningest coach in Ithaca wrestling history with 151 victories.

Horwath’s 5–4 decision victory notched his 48th dual-meet victory, tying him for first all-time in the program with Bart Marrow ’85. He also recorded his 115th overall win, tying him for fifth all time in the program with Nichols.

The Blue and Gold’s dual season is now over. Their next set of competition is the Empire Conference Championships Saturday at Rochester Institute of Technology to determine who competes in this year’s nationals.
