Blue and Gold finish sixth at nationals
Staff Writer |
Junior Jeremy Stierly was one match away from being crowned a national champion.

Stierly won his first three matches all by decision, but fell in the final round 10–4 to Myanganbayar Batsukh of St. John’s University to finish second. He was one of just two unseeded wrestlers to place in the top-20 finalists and recorded the best finish for any Ithaca wrestler since 2002.

He was one of four Ithaca wrestlers to be recognized as an All-American as the Bombers finished sixth in the tournament for the second year in a row.

Others to finish with All-American status for the 2009-10 season were 149-pound junior Blaine Woszczak, 133-pound senior tri-captain Chad Winowich and 157-pound senior Willie Horwath.

Woszczak finished fourth in his class, while Winowich placed sixth and Horwath seventh. The top eight in each class receive All-American recognition.

As the No. 1 seed at 149-pounds, Woszczak won his first two bouts by decision. In the semi-final round, he fell by pin fall to Issaac Dukes of Case Western Reserve University. Then in the third place match, he lost to Matt Mauseth of University of Wisconsin La Crosse 5–2.

Winowich won his first two bouts as the No. 5 seed, but then lost his last three, while Horwath lost his first match, but won his last two, including the seventh place bout at 157 pounds.

The only Ithaca wrestler that did not receive All-American recognition was 125-pound senior tri-captain Jon Gregory, who did receive this honor two years ago as a sophomore. Gregory, who was seeded eighth in his class, lost both of his bouts, one by pinfall and the other by decision.

With the Blue and Gold having four All-Americans this season, they continue the streak of having at least one since 1983. There’s only one school that possesses a longer streak.
