South Hill squad explodes offensively on Geneseo
Assistant Sports Editor |

The women’s soccer team defeated SUNY-Geneseo with a score of 5-0 today, improving their record to 2-1.

in the first half, sophomore Amy Scheffer drew a free kick. Her initial shot was saved, but she followed her rebound and put the ball into the net to put the Bombers up 2-0.

Aside from a great diving save in the first half by senior Aimee Meacham and standout defensive play by senior Beth Hoover, the Blue and Gold were able to keep possession of the ball for the vast majority of the game, which is a key strategy of the team.

“Our focus was to value possession,” said Head Coach Mindy Quigg. “It’s been a priority in practice as well as first touches and fast ball movement.”

Ithaca’s barrage of scoring continued when Feldman gained control of the ball in the right corner and lofted a shot from a difficult angle over the leaping Geneseo goalie, senior Laura Castor.

Feldman credited her goal to the effort she has put on shooting during practice.

“We’ve been working on our shots,” Feldman said. “I saw the opportunity to take it and I shot it hard at the goal.”

The Bombers held Geneseo scoreless for the rest of the half, going into the break leading 3-0.

When the teams returned to the field after halftime, they played only five minutes before the game was put on hold because of lightning. The rain delay lasted for about 40 minutes, causing the players to be a little stiff when they returned to the field.

“It was tough to come back after the delay because out muscles were cold,” Adrien said. “But once we were back on the field we were all set.”

It did not take long for the Blue and Gold to continue lighting up the scoreboard. Five minutes after the rain delay, Adrien made an excellent centering pass from the left corner to Feldman, who easily put it in the back of the net.

The South Hill squad put the lid on Geneseo with a goal by Masterson with 23:39 left in the game.

The Bombers’ next game is at 4 p.m. Wednesday against Elmira College in Elmira, N.Y.
