The women’s tennis team swept the singles competition to win 8-1 in a non-divisional match against SUNY-Cortland on Tuesday, September 15.

The Bombers earned their second win of the season improving to 2-0 overall and 1-0 in divisional and non-divisional play.  The team has swept all their singles matches this season.

Senior captains Sarah Hollis and Devra Reiman teamed up again at third doubles winning 8-3. Both Hollis and Reiman dominated in singles play, as Reiman won 6-3, 6-3 at third singles and Hollis won 6-1, 6-1 at fourth singles.

“In doubles, we have really good communication,” Hollis said. “For singles I was taking it one point at a time and I wasn’t thinking about the future.”

Hollis won Empire 8 Player of the Week for her exceptional play at the Mary Hosking Invitational at William Smith College. Hollis and Reiman paired up to win the Doubles B bracket, with Hollis finishing the week 2-1 in singles competition.

“It was really exciting [getting the award] because I had never gotten that before and I’ am a senior now, so it is a really great honor to have,” Hollis said.

Juniors Melanie Cohen and Melissa Nunez played an extremely tough match at second doubles, dropping the first set 9-8 and then falling 7-3 in the tiebreaker. The team had a combined eight winners off from volleys, five of them by Nunez, while Cohen bounced back after her loss to win at second singles match, 6-3, 6-3.

“After the doubles match I just tried to sit down and forget what happened and clear my head,” Cohen said. “I went into the singles game thinking I had nothing to lose. I played that girl last year and lost to her.”

To complement four aces, Cohen had ten forehand winners at second singles, including the match point winner.

“That’s what I have been working on all summer,” Cohen said. “I’m just trying to hit my forehand as much as possible because I know it is my stronger stroke.”

Sophomore Kesley Harness won a close fifth singles match that went into a super tiebreaker, pulling out a big win in 6-4, 3-6, 10-5.

Despite the victory, the team is still looking to improve their game to stay on top.

“We got to take care of some things in practice such as cutting way, way down on the unforced errors and double fault,” Head Coach Bill Austin said. “If we don’t fix them now, they can jump up and bite you later in the season.”

The Bombers next game is a divisional match, Thursday at 4 p.m., against Hartwick College at the Ithaca College Tennis Courts.
