Bombers win nine events at Ithaca Quad
Contributing Writer |
The women’s track and field team hosted the Ithaca Quad meet Tuesday and won nine. The Bombers maintained their successful spring outdoor season qualifying six athletes for the ECAC Championships at the event.

“The girls followed through on winning and strong performances for the post season,” Head Coach Jennifer Potter said. “Today was a building block.”

The Bombers built on prior success in a variety of events. In the javelin, freshman Ashley Dlubac won with a throw of 39.71 meters, a new personal best. Sophomore Marcia McCord jumped 11.31 meters in the triple jump, only .08 meters shy of the school record she set last year. Sophomore Kristen DeStefano won the pole vault at 3.25 meters, more than one meter higher than her previous personal best.

“[The team] has come leaps and bounds since I’ve been here,” said Assistant Coach Mary Wallenbeck. The South Hill Squad has increased expectations and built on past successes from one season to the next.

Freshman throwers Jessica Hoeffner and Anna Lawrence won events in the shot put and hammer throw, respectively. Freshman Emma Dewart placed second in the high jump with a jump high enough to qualify her for ECAC’s.

The Bombers were victorious in a few dash and hurdle events as well on Tuesday. Senior Diamondo Stratakos won the 200-meter dash and junior Sarah Moskey won the 400-meter dash. Sophomore Lindsay Harris came in first in the 400-meter hurdles.

Sophomore Liz Schloss, won the 10,000-meter run, the last event at the meet.

The meet was only the second home meet for the Blue and Gold and they used that to their advantage

“It’s really good to be able to compete where we practice,” freshman Chelsea Dutton said.

With only a few meets left before ECAC’s, Potter said what her athletes’ priorities are as the school year begins to wind down.

“One of the biggest challenges right now is making sure all of the athletes are prepared for their end of semester academics,” she said. “All of the team is very academically oriented and thinking just as much if not more on academics as we end the semester.”

The next action for the Bombers is at 10 a.m. Sunday at the Big Red Invitational at Cornell University.
