Women's track and field wins conference meet

The women’s track and field team won its second consecutive and fifth ever Empire 8 championship Saturday. The Bombers scored 322 points at the meet, outscoring their closest opponent, Rochester Institute of Technology by 193 points.

Freshman thrower Jessica Hoeffner was named the Field Athlete of the Meet. Hoeffner finished first in the shot put, second in the javelin and discus, and third in the hammer throw.

Sophomore sprinter Marcia McCord won the 400-meter and 200-meter dashes. McCord won the long jump with a jump long enough to qualify for the NCAA championships. Sophomore Kristen DeStefano won the pole vault.

Senior Lauren Koppel and Freshman Emma Dewart qualified for ECAC championships in the high jump, long jump and 100-meter hurdles. Both athletes placed first and second in the hurdles and high jump while finishing second and third to McCord in the long jump.

The Blue and Gold placed first in the 3,000-meter steeplechase and the 5,000-meter run. Freshman Heidi Baumbach won the steeplechase while junior Melanie McCormick won the 5,000-meter run.

Ithaca placed second in the 1,600-meter and 400-meter relays. Both teams qualified for the ECAC championships in their respective events.

The team won 24 All-Empire 8 accolades in individual and relay events. Each winning athlete earned a spot on the All-Empire 8 first-team. Those who finished second earned a spot on the second-team.

The next action for the Bombers is at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Ithaca quad meet at Butterfield Stadium.
