The Big Spoon’s 5 Most Entertaining TV Shows of 2007

Joel McHaleA suburban drug dealer. A piemaker that can wake the dead. A bisexual MySpace hottie. A loudmouthed lush looking for love (again). And one hilarious, sarcastic bastard. 2007 gave us plenty of entertaining things to watch on TV and now I’ve compiled my 5 favorites. Keep in mind: These were not necessarily the best shows of 2007, but they were ones you could enjoy even with your brain turned off. And isn’t that the best kind?

5. Weeds >> Ah, the plight of the suburban soccer mom/drug dealer. The adventures of Nancy Botwin and Co. kept fans hooked for two seasons, creating huge expectations for this past summer’s third. And even though it may have started slow, it picked up quickly and gave us some of the biggest laughs and most surprising twists on the show to date. The season finale tied up some loose ends, but also opened the door to all sorts of possibilities for the show’s future. At this point it’s anyone’s guess where season 4 will take us, but as long as the same gang of pot-lovers is leading the way, I’m willing to go pretty much anywhere.

4. Pushing Daisies >> There are times when “Pushing Daisies” is so cute that it makes me want to vomit. In a good way. Complete with storybook narration and a supernatural twist, it’s one of the most creative shows on TV. And I’m not the only one who’s gushing over it. The show is nominated for three Golden Globe awards, including Best TV Series: Musical or Comedy. And funnily enough, “Pushing Daisies” can be counted as both. Let’s hope the writer’s strike doesn’t keep it from having one of the best premiere seasons I’ve seen in a long time.

3. A Shot at Love with Tila Tequila >> I’m still not entirely sure why people find her so attractive (she looks like hell without make-up on), but 16 straight guys and 16 lesbians competed for Tila Tequila’s heart this season. Some of my favorite moments: Tila giving a lap dance to contestant Dani’s grandma and, of course, the best girl fight I’ve ever seen on TV. Tila won’t be appearing in the show’s second season (I guess things are working out with Bobby), but “A Shot at Love” is getting a spin-off! “That’s Amore” will feature women competing for Domenico, my personal favorite dismissed contestant. Another absurd contestant, Ashley, will also be on the show to help Domenico make his decisions. “That’s Amore” premieres at 10 p.m. March 2 on MTV.

2. I Love New York 2 >> After things didn’t quite work out between New York and season one’s Tango, she set out for a second time to find the man of her dreams. Season two was packed with even more absurd contestants, including a little person! (Appropriately nicknamed “Midget Mac.”) We also learned a lot about New York this season: She has a freaky foot fetish, she has a crippling fear of parrots and horses, and her mother is possibly a man. But we already knew that one. Unfortunately in the end, she chose Tailor Made over the clearly-more-fitting Buddha. Here’s hoping it won’t work out so we’ll get a season 3!

1. The Soup >> The only way I could possibly love “The Soup” any more would be if it was on every single day. But since that’s doubtful, I’ll stick with looking forward to it once a week. Host Joel McHale takes every ounce of television absurdity from the past week and condenses it into a hilarious half hour. Without its help, we may have missed such jewels as: Elizabeth Taylor’s infamous howl, Anne Curry’s repetitive “good morning,” and Charlotte Rae calling Joan Collins a bitch. Joel, you are inspiration to us all.

…So there’s my list. My five most entertaining TV shows of 2007. Did I miss any?
