When bad musicals happen to good movies

February 24, 2009 11:17 pm by Andy

Someone needs to put a stop to this madness!

The long-anticipated Spider-Man musical, now officially titled Spider-Man: Turn off the Dark, has been given an official Broadway debut date of Feb. 18, 2010.

Even with Julie Taymor’s genius at the helm, I can’t help but feel like this is going to end in disaster. I hope I’m wrong.

And speaking of horrible mistakes:

Fresh off its big win at the Oscars, Slumdog Millionaire is also reportedly being turned into a stage musical. The proceeds will be going toward children living in the actual slums, and while I think that’s a great thing, I just don’t see why a musical has to be the answer.

Couldn’t they just have a bake sale or something?

Angela vs. CB! Where’s Tony when you need him?

February 24, 2009 3:02 am by Andy

As Christine Baranski’s appearance on Ugly Betty draws ever closer, we’re beginning to get little nuggets about her character.

We already know she is going to play the mother of Matt — the guy Betty met at YETI last week — but now Entertainment Weekly’s Michael Ausiello suggests that CB may also be entangled in the life of another character: Claire Mead.

Betty is casting the recurring role of Richard Hartley, a fiftysomething Ted Turner-type and the father of Betty’s new love. … Sure, this probably means he’s married to Matt’s mom, Christine Baranski, but, hey, that’s a minor obstacle for someone like Ms. Meade.

I know I complained that Judith Light wasn’t being given enough material as of late, but this is NOT what I had in mind! I’m already choosing sides.

Team CB!

Tracy Morgan is a hard worker

February 23, 2009 7:09 pm by Andy

So I finally decided to stop being lame and make a Twitter account. Or does that make me even more lame? Either way, follow me and I promise I’ll try to be interesting.

Besides spending about an hour discovering the in’s and out’s of the site — I still think I’m somehow doing it wrong — I found a couple of my favorite actors/actresses to “follow.”

The following is an excerpt from Tracy Morgan’s Twitter page. Actually, it’s the only thing he’s written so far:

Run, Sally! Run!

February 16, 2009 3:25 pm by Andy

Sally Field had better start stocking up on Boniva, because it looks like something big is about to go down on Brothers & Sisters.

The show returns with a full night of new episodes — they’re actually calling it a “movie event” — in two weeks, and the trailer literally the single most dramatic thing I have ever seen in my life.

A joyous birth? A shocking death? A family shaken to its roots?

Please… Just give me two solid hours of Sally Field doing slow-motion cardio and I’ll fall asleep with a smile on my face.

Scratch that

February 13, 2009 3:13 pm by Andy

My parade has officially been rained on.

Apparently the rumors of Katherine Heigl and T.R. Knight leaving Grey’s Anatomy are just that — rumors.

Show creator Shonda Rimes set the record straight last night at the NAACP Image Awards (which is a perfectly appropriate venue for that sort of discussion because I hear Heigl and Knight were totally both nominated).

My prediction is that both Izzy and George will become lesbians by the end of the season. … Isn’t that what happens to every character on the show once they stop being interesting?

Good riddance

February 10, 2009 7:41 pm by Andy

James Pickens Jr. has confirmed to Us Weekly that his Grey’s Anatomy costars Katherine Heigl and T.R. Knight are checking out of Seattle Grace.

There’s no word yet on when or how the two will make their exits, but I think the real question we should be asking ourselves is: So what? Izzie’s recent story arcs have been nothing less than garbage as of late, and George has been all-but-invisible for most of this season. So, really, who cares?

I’ve been hating on Grey’s pretty hard as of late, but I honestly think the show is headed back in the right direction. I’m enjoying Lexie and Mark as a couple; I’m looking forward to Callie’s next lesbian escapade; and, hell, I can even stomach Meredith and Derek’s trainwreck of a relationship.

Whether the show’s success will continue on — or if it will go the way of some of the network’s other supposed “hit shows” — remains to be seen.

Here she comes to save the day!

February 6, 2009 3:06 pm by Andy

She can dance. She can sing. But can she save a floundering series from certain doom? Of course she can — she’s freakin’ Christine Baranski.

According to EW, my beloved CB is joining the cast of Ugly Betty for at least three episodes. She’ll play the mother of Matt, Betty’s latest love interest. (A clever EW commenter points out: “Another love interest? … For someone who is supposedly “ugly”, Betty is quite the office mattress!”). Her episodes begin next month.

And as if that weren’t enough, CB will also be making a guest appearance on The Big Bang Theory – one of the few quality sitcoms left on TV — as the mother of head-nerd Leonard (Johnny Galecki) on the show’s Feb. 9 episode.

The thought of CB beaming into my house for free gets me excited beyond comprehension. I’m getting tired of stalking her myself.

The Bonnie brawl wages on

February 3, 2009 11:51 pm by Andy

So… I normally don’t like to write posts about catfights (lies) because I think they’re really immature (more lies), but this one is too good not to keep writing about.

Remember last week, when Faye Dunaway slammed Hilary Duff over her upcoming role in The Story of Bonnie and Clyde? Well, it looks like Lizzie McGuire is fighting back — and hard. In an interview with E!’s Daily 10, Hilary said:

I think that my fans that are going to go see the movie don’t even know who she is, so you know… . I think it was a little unnecessary, but I might be mad if I looked like that now too.

Your move, Faye. But be careful what you say — enemies of Lizzie don’t usually find happy endings. Observe:

Duff vs. Dunaway?

January 29, 2009 5:17 am by Andy

Apparently I’m not the only one amused by the cast of The Story of Bonnie and Clyde.

According to Chicago Sun-Times columnist Bill Zwecker, Faye Dunaway (who played Bonnie Parker in 1967’s Bonnie and Clyde) had a few choice words to say about Hilary Duff landing the title role. Here’s her response to the news, at least according to the source quoted in the paper:

Couldn’t they at least cast a real actress?

Ouch.

Since the quote came from an unnamed source and the paper actually used the phrase “Dunaway supposedly zinged,” I’m going to assume this is complete nonsense. But I don’t care — a knock-down, hair-pulling catfight between Duff and Dunaway is the stuff dreams are made of.

90210 totally goes there

January 28, 2009 6:21 pm by Andy

Throughout its 10 year run Beverly Hills, 90210 made a name for itself by pushing the envelope and tackling teen issues that previously went undiscussed on network TV. And it seems that The CW’s 90210 is attempting to do the same — only faster.

Somehow in just 14 episodes, the spin-off has managed to fit in a slew of storylines revolving around sex, drugs and everything in-between. Here are just a few of the controversial — and completely ridiculous — topics we’ve seen this season:

Seriously, when do these kids find time to do their homework?
