Monday Morning Quarterback

Another weekend, another slew of crazy outcomes. The biggest news this past Saturday was the completely unexpected upset of Hartwick over 10th-ranked St. John Fisher. In case you’re counting, that makes the Hawks 3-1 overall, and 2-0 in the Empire 8. Earlier this season Hartwick upset Ithaca, earning what was then the biggest win in school history. Cross that one out now, and replace it with the Fisher win.

Junior quarterback Jason Boltus played an absolutely flawless game, going 22-of-33 for 336 yards and two touchdowns through the air, and 29 yards and one touchdown on the ground. As of right now, Alfred and Hartwick are tied for first place in the Empire 8 standings. Who saw that coming?

Other musings from around the world of D-III football this weekend:

Other upsets: Three other ranked teams fell to lower ranked orunranked opponents this past weekend. 24th-ranked John Carroll defeated 17th-ranked Baldwin-Wallace 20-17, New Jersey upended 22nd-ranked Montclair State 19-9 and Williamette beat 23rd-ranked Linfield 33-32. Every week there seems to be a handful of upsets that come out of nowhere. Ah, the beauty of college football.

No stopping them?: In their four wins so far this season, Mount Union has outscored their opponents 257-24. That is pretty absurd. No, actually, that is completely absurd. At this point, how can the Purple Raiders not be on their way to another championship?

My darkhorse contender: Alfred University. I’ve been saying it for a few weeks now, but the Saxons just have the look of a serious contender. Obviously Alfred is not a traditional powerhouse in football. But this year is definitely shaping up to be a special one. Quarterback Paul Keeley, running back Vinson Hendrix, wide receiver Jared Manzer and the solid defense should propel Alfred to a playoff berth and, now with Fisher’s loss to Hartwick, possibly even the Empire 8 title. I’m following Alfred closer and closer each week. This Saturday they host Hartwick, which will now be a battle for the Empire 8 lead. Easily my choice for game of the week.

That’s it from me this week, short and sweet. But check back in next week for more Monday Morning Quarterback, and check back throughout the week for more posts on D-III sports.
