Roundup: Basketball season in full swing
I hope everyone had an enjoyable Thanksgiving. The annual stuff-your-face-with-food holiday was again good to Hat Trick, full of lots of turkey, but sadly no mashed potatoes (a crime, in my opinion).
It’s been a solid two weeks since my last post (my bad…), so there’s a lot to catch up on. First let’s take a look at the football playoff picture.
- There are eight teams remaning in the football bracket, with the quarterfinal match ups taking place this Saturday. What figures to be the best game of the four match ups is the heavyweight battle between defending National Champion Mount Union and one of last year’s final four teams, St. John Fisher. The Purple Raiders got a bit of a scare in the first round by Ithaca, but easily handled The College of New Jersey in the second round. Fisher cruised past Hobart and Curry in the first and second round, respectively, so both teams are playing their best football. My prediction: Mount Union emerges victorious, but in a nail biter; 31-27.
- Wheaton College defeated Messiah College 1-0 in the National Championship to claim its third title in women’s soccer in the last four years. On the men’s side, Middlebury College won their first ever National Title, besting Trinity 4-3 in penalty kicks.
- And finally, my personal favorite, both the men’s and women’s basketball seasons are well under way. Most teams have played between three and five games by this point, though it’s still early to really pick out favorites on either side. D3hoops.com’s first top 25 polls feature perennial powerhouses Amherst and Mary Washington in the top two spots. That obviously figures to change as the season drags on, and that’s why college basketball is awesome.
