Last Week of Server Troubles

Sharp Notes has been assured that this will be the last week with server issues, so brace yourself for fewer forks (and more music action) coming on the 14th.

Hooray! More Server Issues!

Hopefully there are enough Google Images which humorously convey the word “server” in order to keep you entertained until this blog can once again be updated regularly. Sorry everybody!

Week 3 Of Server Trouble

???????????????????????

As the headline (and humorously misguided photo) suggests, there is still something wrong with the Sharp Notes server, which is making it impossible to blog regularly. Because of that, we are suspending posts for a THIRD time, but our web boss has promised us we will be up by next week. Tune in Monday for the return of regular coverage!

Uh Oh!

Internet problems have pushed back our return to posting another week. We swear we will reconvene Monday better than ever - no worries. In the meantime, Patrick Swayze is dying - pray for him by watching the video for “She’s Like The Wind.”

Spring Break! WOOOOOOO!

?????? spring.jpg

It’s Spring Break at I.C., and even though we are in D.C. this semester sans vacation, we are still going to suspend publishing so we can take plenty of time to high five our bros, as illustrated by the gentlemen above. Enjoy the week and we will be back on Monday.

Farewell, “Week At A Glance”!

Given that The Ithacan has launched a great new local happenings blog, the sharply-titled?South Hill, Sharp Notes is retiring the Monday “Week At A Glance” spot, which featured local concert listings. In its place, we will debut “Genre Specific,” a series chronicling the?style and artists of nontraditional music genres. From hard bop to brown-eyed soul, different techniques and regions will be given the spotlight in the spirit of sonic adventure. So long, “Week At A Glance”?- we’ve had some good times!

The Death Of Their Father Proves That Donny and Marie Osmond Are Indeed Human and NOT Botox-Fueled Robots (Although We Still Have Our Sincere Doubts)

?????????? donnymariees_468?416.jpg

Musical family dynasties worldwide?were shocked today?as it was announced?that?George Osmond, father of Donny, Marie and the rest of the Osmond family singers, died today of natural causes. The 90-year-old exemplified the classic American success story: devout Mormon serves in World War II, has nine kids after his return home, teaches kids how to sing, and whores them out at a young age in pursuit of fame and fortune.

But nay, don’t refer to George Osmond as the white?Joseph Jackson, the father and manager / promoter of his kids’ group, The Jackson Five. Nay, consider this one-time insurance salesman as?the white Joseph Jackson who fathered a less-than engaging child act. The Jackson clan?shone with?considerable musical genius at a young age, while the Osmonds were always the slightly-disturbing version of a young singing group. While the Jacksons were gettin’ down, the Osmonds were gettin’ awkward, fusing their music with an overt spirituality which?soon brought them from endearing to bizarre.

By the ’80s, as the careers of Janet and Michael began to skyrocket, Donnie and Marie, the cornerstones of the Osmonds, began to fade into self-parody. In fact,?few?artifacts of their recording career still exist, save their perennial Christmas albums, which gradualy?gather dust sitting on?your grandmother’s mantle.

No matter - George Osmond did the best he could to raise a pious family. And the next time Donny is hosting a reality show that gets cancelled after two episodes, or Marie talks like a crazy cat lady while shilling her dolls on QVC, they will surely have a glint of sadness in their eyes for their dear departed father.

P.S. - I hope someone keeps an eye on Marie - she seems like she?could use some?support. (bad taste?)

Snoop Dogg stops by Donny and Marie’s 1998?talk show to embarrass white people:

N.E.R.D. Rises From The Dead!

Hurrah! Pharrell Williams, one-half of The Neptunes and one-third of?N.E.R.D., told NME?today that the production team’s rock band will be releasing a third album this spring. This comes as a surprise to many fans who remember the drama between the band and their former record label. In a 2005 radio interview, Pharrell said that he was so unhappy with the group’s direction under the supervision of Virgin Records that he considered N.E.R.D.?to be over. Yet he soon rescinded his words via?the band’s?management. Even with the clarification, many fans were left under the impression that the group’s 2003 sophomore album, Fly Or Die, would be their last.

Details are limited about the new disc, but Pharrell promises it will be a return to form and that the majority of the album’s tracks are about “pretty girls.” As Sharp Notes is obsessed with?N.E.R.D.’s 2001 debut? In Search Of…, this back-to-basics approach seems pretty dope. Nay, very dope.

Sharp Notes’ Canadian Adventure!

Sharp Notes is going on a temporary hiatus in order to explore the natural wonders of Niagara Falls (on the Canadian side - duh!). We will resume normal posting again?on Monday. In the meantime, if you get lonely, whip out your Bryan Adams and Celine Dion CDs and think of us.

A Tough Week For Rap

Prodigy

All the bling in the world cannot save a bevy of rap superstars from facing a difficult few days. Here are a few of the noteworthy developments:

-10/5 - Hip-hop clothing heavyweights Southpole and Rocawear lost out on a bidding war to have their name on the?New Jersey Nets’ now-Continental Airline Arena. Instead, the venue will be known as the Izod Center, after the popular, distinctly?non-hip-hop line.

-10/6 - Rapper Beanie Sigel has?been issued a warrant for his arrest after failing to return a car for more than a month after it was due back at a Philadelphia rental agency. Oh yeah, he also had a suspended license during the time of rental.

-10/6 - Rapper Lil’ Wayne was arrested after a show in Idaho on felony fugitive charges after being accused?of possession of a controlled substance in Georgia.

?-10-9 - Diddy is being sued for $19 million dollars after allegedly reneging on a contract regarding the sale of Notorious B.I.G. audio recordings.

-10/10 - Mobb Deep member Prodigy pleaded guilty to criminal possession of a loaded weapon after a traffic stop last October. He faces three-and-a-half years in prison.

Perhaps the only good news to come out of the rap world is today’s announcement that Ghostface Killah will soon be battling himself for chart supremacy. His newest solo album, The Big Dough Rehab, comes out on December 4, the same date as?his newest album with the Wu-Tang Clan, 8 Diagrams, drops. Kanye & 50 - eat your heart out.
