A Legacy of Service
April 25, 2008 12:50 pm by Kathy
Like the heading says, Ithaca College will be celebrating the legacy of service of President Peggy R. Williams today until about 5 p.m.
Williams will step down as president in May and will spend the 2008-09 year on sabbatical. She will retire in 2009.
When Williams was inaugurated president of the college in 1998, she held a day of events to promote community service. To celebrate her retirement, the Center for Student Leadership and Involvement, paired with several other campus groups, will do the same.
A Community Service and Social Justice Fair will be held until 3 p.m. on the Campus Center Quad. A celebration will be held immediately following, in which on-campus performance groups, faculty and staff will say formal farewells to the outgoing president.
Check theithacan.org tomorrow for multimedia coverage of this event.

Kristof comes to campus
April 4, 2008 11:58 am by Erica R. Hendry
Staff Writer Jackie Palochko wrote about the events sponsored by STAND and Cornell University’s anti-genocide group, STARS, this weekend:
Ithaca College?s anti-genocide student group, STAND, will join with Cornell University?s anti-genocide student organization, STARS, to host ?Dream for Darfur: A Two-Day Academic Symposium on the World?s Darkest Olympics? on Saturday and Monday.
Saturday?s events will feature speakers Adam Sterling, director of the Sudan Divestment Task Force and star of the documentary ?Darfur Now,? and Mohamed Yahya, executive director of the Damanga Coalition for Freedom and Democracy. The speeches will take place at noon Saturday in Textor Hall room 102. At 2:30 p.m. the speakers will be at the HEC Auditorium, Goldwin Smith, at Cornell University.
The events will conclude with speeches Monday by New York Times Columnist Nicholas Kristof at 4:30 p.m. in the Anabel Taylor Hall auditorium at Cornell and at 6:30 p.m. in Textor 102. Kristof, a renowned Darfur activist, will speak about ways to stop the genocide in Darfur.
The symposium will stress that China, the Sudan?s chief diplomatic sponsor and weapons provider, can play an important role in ending the genocide in Darfur.
Kristof, a two-time Pulitzer Prize winner, has traveled to Darfur many times since 2004 to report on the atrocities. Kristof said the horrific images he witnessed in Darfur motivated him to bring more attention to the genocide.

WWJD March 21-2
March 21, 2008 10:29 am by Jamie
This weekend?s music scene ? there?s a lot going on!
Castaways ? 413-415 Taughannock Blvd.; www.castawaysithaca.com
- Jimkata: IC?s own, Jimkata is kind of a rock band with extremely heavy funk influnces ? they?re good. Friday, 9:30 p.m. $7
- The Speckers: By now ? if there?s anyone who actually reads this ? readers know I?m a sucker for Americana bands and even more so for fiddles. But the Speckers are too ?backwoods, pa on the porch? for me. Saturday, 9:30 p.m. $7
The Haunt ? 702 Willow Ave.; www.thehaunt.com
- Rozatones and Mystic Trick: Two IC-rooted bands, both put on really tight, fun funk/reggae shows. A fun show to be at where you?ll most likely see someone you know. Friday, 9 p.m., $7, $5 with student ID
- Final Call, Fairway, and The Golden Dogs: Final Call isn?t band punkish-rock, but they sound young. Worth going to if you want to start following them early. Classic pop-punk but with a softer quality ? I actually kind of like them. The Golden Dogs are indie rock, but not that soft whiney indie, more the quirky electro-pop dance indie, I really want to see this band now! Saturday, 7 p.m., $5
Felicia?s Atomic Lounge ? 508 W. State Street; www.atomicloungeithaca.com
- The Hogwashers: This is the kind of fiddle-infused country-Americana that borders on my just secretly liking. Think ?O Brother Where Art Thou,? you know, the George Clooney movie. And I think The Hogwashers are playing at Castaways later in the month so if you like them this time around you can see them. Friday, 5:30 ? 8:30 p.m. Free
- The Piano Creeps: Very soft, wispy vocals rock. Not bad though, probably good background music. Sunday, 7 p.m. Free
The Nines ? 311 College Ave.; www.theninesithacany.com
- Ted Rosedale: Ok, first off, this man has the coolest website ever, www.tedrosedale.com. That, plus his classic rock is pretty good. I feel like he?d be a fun guy to see live. Friday, 10 p.m. $5
ABC Caf? ? 308 Steward Ave.; www.theabccafe.com
- Alize: Tradition fiddle, guitar and flute Celtic music. Celtic music is rarely bad so you can?t really go wrong here. Saturday, 10 p.m. Usually free but bring a few bucks for the donation basket
The Chapter House ? 400 Stewart Ave.; www.chapterhouseithaca.com
- The Mofos: Heavy surfer music. Odd but interesting. Saturday, 10 p.m. $5
*Personal pick of the week: I can?t decide this week, I basically want to see all but three of the bands I?ve listed. Unfortunately my funds are tight after Spring Break and I?m sure your?s are too so pick a place and have fun!

WWJD March 7-9
March 7, 2008 4:31 pm by Jamie
It may be the beginning of spring break folks, but there?s still plenty of great music if you?re around this weekend!
Castaways ? 413-415 Taughannock Blvd.; www.castawaysithaca.com
- Hubcap: Rock, but the singer has a nice distinctiveness to his voice. I like it. Friday, 9:30 p.m. $10
- Lost Sailors: Pretty good blues instrumentals, but I don?t really like the vocals. I hate when that happens. Saturday, 9:30 p.m. $6
- Urban Horse Thieves: Bluegrass to the core. I think I?ve seen the Horse Thieves perform live before and didn?t really enjoy the show, but people were going wild so clearly it?s a personal preference. Sunday, 2 p.m. $5
The Haunt ? 702 Willow Ave.; www.thehaunt.com
- The Pilfers: Ska-reggae fronted by Coolie Ranx ? formerly of The Toasters. It?s lighter so it?s good ska for ska lovers and newcomers alike. Plus, this is a stop on a small reunion tour, so don?t miss them. Friday, 9 p.m., $5
- Awake the Hero: Another very young sounding band that needs a lot of refining. Saturday, 6 p.m. $5
Felicia?s Atomic Lounge ? 508 W. State Street; www.atomicloungeithaca.com
- Phoenyx Rising: Female-fronted soft rock. This time it?s a band instead of Felicia?s usual solo Sunday show. Not bad. Sunday, 7 p.m. Free
Lost Dog Lounge ? 106-112 South Cayuga Street; www.lostdogcafe.net/ithaca
- Kevin Kinsella: An Ithaca reggae staple, this guy is everywhere. Go hear him just so you know who he is. Friday, 7 p.m., Probably about $5ish
- Johnny Dowd Band: The one song I heard sounded like spoken poetry over electric music. It seemed like one of those things that is just a little too Ithaca. Sunday, 8 p.m., Probably about $5ish (Lost Dog doesn?t post show prices, it?s terribly inconvenient.)
The Chapter House ? 400 Stewart Ave.; www.chapterhouseithaca.com
- Trevor MacDonald Band: American rock in all its glory. But these guys are really good live, one of those bands you like better live then on disc. I saw them a few weeks ago, definitely worth seeing. Saturday, 10 p.m. $5
*Personal pick of the week: The Pilfers just because it?s a reunion tour and I love ska. If I wasn?t going to that show though, I would probably check out Hubcap on Friday night. I?m mad I have to miss the Trevor MacDonald show on Saturday, but unfortunately I?m heading out of town. Someone go in my place!

WWJD Feb. 29 - March 2
February 29, 2008 3:57 pm by Jamie
Castaways ? 413-415 Taughannock Blvd.; www.castawaysithaca.com
- Benevento-Russo Duo: From what I can gather there?s a guy who plays keyboards and a guy who plays drums. It all just sounds like noise to me. Friday, 9p.m. $15
- Excepter: A Cornell Fan Club Collective show, Excepter is an experimental band that doesn?t rehearse before shows and uses only electronic instruments. The music isn?t actually as bad as you?d think and I?d be willing to be this is probably a pretty interesting live show. Saturday, 9 p.m. $7
The Haunt ? 702 Willow Ave.; www.thehaunt.com
- Ayruveda: A good local hard rock band that puts on a great high-energy show. I?m not sure is Ayruveda or Stemm is headlining, but go out for Ayruveda. Friday, 9 p.m., $5 (I think)
- Fazeshift, Scenic and Fatal Attraction: Unless you are a sixteen-year-old stay away from this show. The bands are mediocre at best and fairly young I think. Saturday, 6 p.m., $5
Felicia?s Atomic Lounge ? 508 W. State Street; www.atomicloungeithaca.com
- Richie Stearns: It?s not quite country, bluegrass or Americana, and I?m at a loss for how to describe it. It?s not bad though and seems pretty danceable. Friday, 5:30 ? 8:30 p.m. Free
- LIVE AIDrianne: Adrianne played at Felicia?s a few weeks ago but got in an accident in the Ithaca snow, totaled her car and is stuck in our town. So go, hear an acoustic singer-songwriter and help her get back home. Saturday, 5 p.m. Free, but donations are GREATLY appreciated.
- Catherine Joy: So by now you?ve figured out that Sunday is pretty much acoustic female performers night at Felicia?s. Catherine Joy has a slightly deeper, fuller voice though. A distinctive, nice sound. Sunday, 7 p.m. Free
The Nines ? 311 College Ave.; www.theninesithacany.com
- The Lonely H: Softer, lighter, more upbeat classic rock with a little something extra every once and a while. Friday, 10 p.m. $5
- Sirsy: Female fronted rock band, not very heavy though. It?s good but not great. I think I saw Sirsy live one time, it was a pretty good show. Saturday, 10 p.m. $5
The Chapter House ? 400 Stewart Ave.; www.chapterhouseithaca.com
- Jsan and the Analogue Sons: Roots reggae. A classic local band that lots of people love. Personally, I?m not a huge fan but the band?s worth checking out for yourself. Saturday, 10 p.m. $5
*Personal pick of the week: This is a sad week, there?s no show?s I particularly want to go see.

Reminder - wear white to the game tonight
February 29, 2008 12:58 pm by Andrew
The men’s basketball team hosts the Empire 8 tournament for the first time ever tonight. Don’t miss out on this historic moment. The Bombers face rival St. John Fisher College at 8 p.m. in the Ben Light Gymnasium, but if you’re in the mood for some strong, competitive Division III basketball, check out the night’s first game - No. 2 Stevens Institute of Technology against No. 3 Nazareth College.
Fans are encouraged to wear white for the Ithaca game, to create a true sense of home court advantage. It will easily be the most raucous crowd and game of the season, and (for once) there is expected to be a full crowd, so get there early. Ticket prices are $2 for students and $4 for the general public.
