Networking connections

This weekend, the Ithaca College campus will be buzzing with students and alumni spanning more than 50 years. Last year, the college decided to move Alumni Weekend — typically in July — to the same weekend of homecoming. This saved the college money and also allowed current students to meet with former ones. The college hosted events, such as a senior class and alumni happy hour, which allowed for networking opportunities. Brenda Carlisle, events coordinator for the Office of Alumni Relations, said about 100 students attended the events last year.

Green learning

On Sept. 17, Ithaca College provided a green learning opportunity for the college community that went beyond the classroom. The college hosted the Clean Energy Summit: Re-Imagining Upstate New York’s Energy Future to examine the future of clean energy in New York state. In a crowded room in Emerson Suites, a panel and several speakers discussed green business development, clean energy technology and green jobs. Speakers from organizations like the Alliance for Clean Energy New York and the Solar Energy Consortium, as well as Rep. Maurice Hinchey, discussed ways to attain clean energy in upstate New York.

Measuring satisfaction

This year, Ithaca College decided to participate in The Chronicle of Higher Education’s “Great Colleges to Work For” survey to better assess employee satisfaction. When the results were released, the college was not listed as a great college to work for.

Vacant no more

The newest hot spot at Ithaca College was nothing but vacant space a couple of months ago. But the college has successfully turned the empty floor into a well-used student space now known as tc lounge.

Giving blood, saving lives

Ithaca College students are being asked to roll up their sleeves and donate blood — another way to give back to the local and national community.

Joining Forces

The Ithaca College community proved once again that when one of its own is in need, it steps up to help. This past summer, a car accident left pianist Joshua Oxford ’07 paralyzed from the neck down. But on Saturday, Oxford’s friends, including current students and faculty, came together to raise money and show support for the friend they remember as always being happy. About 700 people showed up to the benefit concert in Ford Hall to raise a substantial amount. The family wishes to not release the amount, but donations are still being accepted online to help Oxford and his family.

Green machine

Going green pays off. For the 2009-10 academic year, Ithaca College saved $1.6 million in its utilities budget because of a decline in electrical consumption. Carl Sgrecci, vice president of finance and administration, said electrical consumption has declined because of energy conservation measures across campus. Examples include installing energy-efficient lighting fixtures and upgrading heating and cooling units. The additions of the Peggy Ryan Williams Center and the Park Center for Business and Sustainable Enterprise — both Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design-certified — also contributed to savings.
