Crews adapt to new waters

The fall season for men’s and women’s crew may be in danger before it even begins.

The fall season for men’s and women’s crew may be in danger before it even begins.

With the cancellation of New York State Championships this past weekend, the women’s crew found itself in uncertain waters.

While some athletes jump-started their sports careers when they were young, the freshmen rowers on the women’s crew team this season are getting their feet wet for the first time.
The women’s crew dominated the competition over the weekend at the New York State Championships in Whitney Point, N.Y., winning five gold medals. The women’s first varsity 8, second varsity 8, third varsity 8, novice 8 and second novice 8 all won gold medals.

The women’s crew has had to adjust its lineups because of injuries, relying on rowers from other boats to step up and fill the gap.
Women’s crew finished up the regular season against boats from four other schools yesterday in Pittsfield, Mass. The Bombers’ third varsity boat set the tone, posting a first-place finish against Williams College.
Women’s crew remained unbeaten in varsity races this season, beating out St. Lawrence University and Skidmore College yesterday. The first, second and third varsity 8 boats for the Blue and Gold all won their respective races, with the first varsity 8 competing against another nationally ranked opponent in No. 7 St. Lawrence.
