While students assume that lots of sex is going on around them, the numbers don’t add up. Students who took The Ithacan’s survey said they thought their fellow students had about two sexual partners each last semester, in actuality most Ithaca College students had one or no sexual partners. Only 20 of our 450 survey-takers reported having six or more sexual partners last semester.

The Ithacan found this rumor to be true. More than a quarter of heterosexual students had no sexual partners last semester, but less than 17 percent of LGBT students were abstinent last semester. While only 2.3 percent of heterosexual students said they had sexual encounters with six or more people last semester, 12.7 percent of LGBT students said they had six or more sexual partners in the same time.

While about 64 percent of heterosexual students said they regretted drunken sexual decisions, nearly half of LGBT students said they’d had a drunken sexual experience that they later regretted.

This rumor is true. At Ithaca College in the last semester, more than 70 percent of female students had either one or zero partners. Not even 60 percent of male students could say the same. The more partners, the larger the amount of disparity between numbers of sex partners for men and women. Less than 0.5 percent of women had six or more sexual partners last semester while almost nine percent of men reported the same.
