Editorial: Real estate purchases must be investments for the future of the college

Over the past several years, the Ithaca College administration has bought a number of properties surrounding the college; most recently they purchased 917 Danby Road and 929-931 Danby Road in July 2023.
Smiley’s Mini Mart is located right off the college’s campus at 825 Danby Road, next door to the Sunset Grill. Before Smiley’s Mini Mart opened in August 2022, the store was a local convenience store chain called Dandy’s. Raj Singh, who also owns a store in Newfield, bought Rogan’s Corner from Dandys in June 2022 because he wanted to cater to college students.

With new owners and a new menu, Smiley’s Mini Mart on Rogan’s Corner hopes to appeal more to Ithaca College students.
The Tompkins County Sheriff’s Office initially reported Oct. 29 that a man had forcibly touched two women on separate occasions. The first incident occurred Oct. 14 in the 2600 block of Danby Road, and the second occurred Oct. 28 on the Thayer Preserve Trail on Sand Bank Road.

A section of Aurora Street/Danby Road near Ithaca College will be closed Feb. 6–7 while the City of Ithaca installs a new water service line.
Some Ithaca College students have sustained injuries or felt unsafe walking along Route 96B — Danby Road — without sidewalks. For almost a decade, the Town of Ithaca has been considering a plan to install sidewalks on Danby Road, however these plans have never come to fruition.
