My Argentine amigos placed an emphasis on enjoying the present. These differing perspectives provide new definitions of what it means to be productive.
When I visited the Retiro Bus Station and saw that people had made homes behind it, my eyes were opened to the neglected areas residing in the shadows of this city.
"I am going to own up to the fact that I am learning," Elena Piech said. "And when I return to the United States, I am going to talk to my abuelos in Spanish."
“I do feel they’re important,” Earle said. “I think it’s a good first step. In some ways, the problems we had, like the staff had, are some of the same problems that I think we’re going to have with diversity and inclusion.”
“I think it's a representation of what it feels like when coming into a community,” Hall said. “It feels like an interview, and if not everything fits, then it's ostracizing.”
In a recent announcement, the college laid out parts of the diversity action plan that are on track — such as developing a Fall 2016 campus-climate survey — and parts of the plan that are falling behind — such as developing a community review board for the Office of Public Safety and Emergency Management.
In Fall 2015, Ithaca College set a timeline for addressing issues regarding diversity and campus climate. Although the plan covers a timeline of roughly 2 1/2 years, Roger Richardson, associate provost of diversity, inclusion and engagement and interim chief diversity officer, said it is not realistic for all deadlines to be made.
Luca Maurer, program director for the Center for LGBT Education, Outreach and Services, with his co-author Eli Green, assistant professor of public health at William Paterson University, published their book, “The Teaching Transgender Toolkit,” three months ago.
