On Oct. 24, Demi Lovato released her ninth studio album titled “It’s Not That Deep.” The album marks a return to a pop style sound, though with more electro sound this time. This was something that Lovato stepped away from in her 2022 album, in which she went for more of a rock sound.
Lovato released rock versions of some of her past albums in a project titled “Revamped.” With fans expressing their love for Lovato’s pop music, Lovato decided to go back to pop for this project, something that seemed to be the right choice as the quality of this album is better than that of the previous two projects.
The lead single on the album titled “Fast” was released Aug. 1. The song introduced the new era for Lovato with intimate lyrics and a club-like backing track. It is very reminiscent of older music of Lovato’s, but also adds some new vibes that create an earworm of a song.
Another song that is reminiscent of the classic Demi Lovato music is the third track on the album titled “Frequency.” The lyrics are very similar to the type of lyrics we are used to with Lovato. The new electro sound she is going for throughout the album ushers in the new era while also paying tribute to the music of her past.
“Sorry to Myself” is a highlight on the album. The song serves as a reflection on some issues that she had been facing in her recent past, including in her love life. The song also reflects on pressure that she had been putting on herself to be strong and how, looking back, she felt she should have tried to be a little more vulnerable. The song not only serves as a reminder to herself that it is OK to be vulnerable and also serves as a reminder for others that it is OK to be more open about their emotions as well.
“Kiss” is a very intimate song. Lovato reveals this vibe right from the gate with the lyrics “Kiss for fun, it’s fun to kiss / I use my tongue la-la-la-like this/ Like this.” The song shows a very fun and interesting side to Lovato. While it is very raunchy, it also shows some of the happier moments in Lovato’s life at the current moment.
“Before I knew you” is the sad song on the album, serving as a reflection of a past relationship of Lovato’s and how she wishes it could have worked out but at the same time how she wishes that it might not have even happened. It is a song that can be very relatable to many listeners and can also spur a lot of emotions. It shows an emotional side to Lovato, giving fans a look into her personal life.
Overall, the album is pretty good. However, it lacks some of the hits we have seen in some of Lovato’s previous projects. Nonetheless, the old Lovato is starting to come back. The idea to switch back to a pop vibe from the rock vibe was a good choice as it fits Lovato’s personality better, as well as her lyrical abilities. Many things have happened in Lovato’s life since she last released new music and fans were given a reflection of this time through this album. The album could have been better, but it is definitely a step up from her previous one.
