Emergency relief fund launching in Spring 2025 aims to support faculty and staff

In January 2025, Ithaca College is opening up applications to a new resource for some college staff and faculty. The Employee Emergency Relief Fund, managed by the college’s Office of Human Resources, distributes money to the college’s employees in times of need and is entirely supported by voluntary donations from other employees.

SGC discusses feedback to improve orientation for incoming students

The Ithaca College Student Governance Council met Nov. 18 to hear from Caryanne Keenan, director of New Student and Transition Programs, about Fall 2024 orientation and plans for Fall 2025 orientation. The SGC provided suggestions on how Keenan could further help new students get acclimated to the college.

App created by Ithaca College alums educate people about U.S. politics

Jason Starkman ’22 and Sam Edelstein ’22 said that while studying at Ithaca College they noticed that for them and their peers, making sense of the complexities of politics was intimidating and time-consuming. Their observation called them to action and in 2023, the pair joined a tech startup with a vision to create an accessible civic education app. On Sept. 4,  Starkman and Edelstein, chief technical officer and chief operating officer, helped launch Poliquicks.

Latino students establish chapter of professional development association at Ithaca College

The Association of Latino Professionals for America has officially established a chapter at Ithaca College, with the aim to provide a vital platform for Latino students to connect, grow and thrive professionally.

SGC holds first town hall of the Fall 2024 semester to hear from students

The Ithaca College Student Governance Council held a town hall meeting Nov. 4 in IC Square, to hear from students and give updates to those in attendance. The SGC held the town hall to boost engagement with the student body. Jason Starkman ’22 and Sam Edelstein ’22 came to the town hall to talk about their civic education startup Poliquicks. Then, Junior Quincy Fireside, president of Ithaca College Students for a Free Palestine, spoke about the college divesting from Israel. The council also heard from sophomore Ben Epstein, president of Ithacans for Israel, about combating antisemitism on campus.
Stanley Bazile, vice president for Student Affairs and Campus Life, spoke to the Ithaca College Student Governance Council about suicide prevention and student civil disobedience.

SGC discusses proposed changed to student conduct policy

Stanley Bazile, vice president for Student Affairs and Campus Life, spoke with the Ithaca College Student Governance Council on Oct. 28 about suicide awareness. The council asked Bazile questions about the purpose of the Office of Student Affairs and Campus Life and student civil disobedience on campus. The SGC also heard from Samantha Shaffer, associate director for Student Conduct and Community Standards, about proposed changes to the college’s Student Code of Conduct.

While the county is working on adapting to the immediate challenges of the shelter system, two key housing programs that help individuals transition out of homelessness — the Village and Sunflower House — are struggling to remain afloat. 

Tompkins County experiences lack of transitional housing and long-term care services

Over the past month, housing assistance resources in Tompkins County have faced multiple financial and resource-related challenges. While the county is working on adapting to the immediate challenges of the shelter system, two key housing programs that help individuals transition out of homelessness — the Village and Sunflower House — are struggling to remain afloat. 
The National Labor Relations Board recognized Ithaca College's only staff union in 2003. The union was recognized as an official collective bargaining unit associated with the UGSOA as local chapter 507.

Ithaca College's only staff union — The United Government Security Officers of America Local 507 — advocates for fair working conditions, compensation and disciplinary procedures for some employees within the Office of Public Safety and Emergency Management. The UGSOA’s current contract with the college lasts through June 2026.
Eric Steinschneider, associate professor in the Department of Philosophy and Religion, and Eric Machan Howd, director of extended studies, are co-founders of the certificate program.

New certificate program in peace studies formalizes affiliation between IC and Namgyal Monastery

During summer 2024, the Office of the Provost approved a new professional certificate program in peace studies. The first of its kind at the college, the Ithaca College Peace Studies (ICPS) program will be the first formal affiliation between the college and Ithaca’s Namgyal Monastery Institute of Buddhist Studies, which serves as the Dalai Lama’s official monastery of North America.
