Baseball: Bombers split doubleheader at Stevens Institute of Technology

The baseball team split today’s doubleheader with the Stevens Institute of Technology Ducks in Hoboken, N.J. The visiting Bombers won the first game 9–2 while the host Ducks won the second game 10–6.

In the opener, freshman pitcher John Prendergast started for the Blue and Gold, giving up just one run on six hits in five innings of work. He also struck out seven batters. The lone run Prendergast surrendered came on a home run off the bat of graduate student leftfielder Matt Glassman in the first inning.

The Bombers scored four runs in the second inning and five more the next inning to take the lead for good. Junior catcher Kevin Primm highlighted the fourth inning with a three-run double. He added another RBI the next inning with a sacrifice fly. Senior first baseman Mike Preite and junior leftfielder Andrew Turner both had three hits and senior centerfielder Mike Rosenbaum added two RBIs.

In the second game of the day, four Bomber pitchers combined to give up ten runs, ten hits and eight walks. Stevens was led by Glassman and senior first baseman T.J. Alcorn, who both drove in three runs. The Ducks scored four runs in the fourth inning and five more in the seventh to secure the victory.

Four Duck pitchers combined to keep the Blue and Gold offense in check, led by junior pitcher Tyler Courter, who started and pitched seven innings allowing just four runs. Preite and senior second baseman Matt Keller each homered for the Bombers. Junior catcher Corey Caswell added a career best three hits.

Following the doubleheader, the Bombers are now 11—4—1. They play SUNY-Oneonta next at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday on Freeman Field.
