The Bombers have been scheduling difficult non-conference opponents in the beginning of the season for the past few years. These tough teams have helped the women’s soccer team prepare for the challenges of the Empire 8 Conference.
Last season’s 2-1 loss to Keuka College was fresh in the minds of the softball team today as they defeated the Storm with 5-1 and 14-0 victories in Keuka Park, N.Y.
The last time the softball team (23—11 overall, 10—0 Empire 8) faced the Cornell University Big Red (20—21 overall, 11—5 Ivy League), they surrendered a walk-off grand slam in extra innings. This year, there was another game-winning grand slam, this time falling in favor of the Bombers.
The road to the Empire 8 Conference title will run through Kostrinsky Field, which has historically been a difficult place for opposing teams to play, after the softball team (22—11 overall, 10—0 Empire 8) clinched the top seed in the conference tournament.
Despite temperatures in the 30s, the softball team had no problems keeping its bats hot against SUNY-Buffalo today, picking up victories of 11-2 and 11-6.
The softball team entered its five-series road trip with an overall record of 9-10. But with a rejuvenated offense and solid pitching, they have surged above the .500 mark and currently hold a mark of 18-11 overall following yesterday’s doubleheader sweep against King’s College.
After winning the first game at SUNY-Oneonta today by a score of 7-4, the softball team needed a win to continue its nine-game winning streak, while the Red Dragons needed a win to snap their four-game losing streak.
While the softball team’s power has been its driving force in Empire 8 Conference games, its ability to put runners on base has helped it seal eight of its 16 wins this season.
Despite being away from Kostrinsky Field, the softball team has felt right at home by winning their sixth consecutive road game and eight consecutive game overall.
