The Ithaca College Office of Public Safety is heading into the implementation phase of some key initiatives promised last year, spurred by student protests regarding the racial climate on campus.

Faculty and staff are looking for ways to ramp up student interest in the college’s weekly diversity and inclusion discussion groups. These groups were created in response to student protests last fall to address complaints about the administration’s lack of emphasis on diversity and inclusion. However, students do not seem to be attending the discussion groups.
Though the Terrace Dining Hall at Ithaca College underwent major renovations this year, it has experienced new problems with staffing and operations. Jeffrey Scott, Sodexo area general manager, said attendance in the dining hall has been up about 10 percent so far this semester, which he said could be attributed to the renovations. However, the dining hall experienced a shortage of student employees and is also missing a chef manager.
“This year, I’m really going to take that space and critique the campus, the leaders on campus and the structures that exist,” Foote said.

The board is also emphasizing a more flexible approach to policies and issues it decides to take on based on what is important to students.

The Ithaca College Student Government Association held its first meeting of the 2016–17 academic year in the newly-renovated Terrace Dining Hall, where it hosted a guest speaker from Sodexo and prepared for its upcoming elections.
Like the African drum ensemble that greeted the Class of 2020 as they walked into the Ithaca College 2016 Convocation ceremony, the speakers who addressed them conveyed an upbeat attitude toward the upcoming year.
