After falling to SUNY-Cortland in two close games Wednesday, the softball team was looking to win all four of its matchups in two doubleheaders Saturday and Sunday. Though the Bombers came out 3–1 on the weekend, they were happy with the result overall.
“The two against Cortland, those are always antsy games everybody’s really anxious about,” junior Kait Dolan said. “Those, although we lost, we know that we can beat them. We’re a better team. They were close games. Yesterday’s games, we definitely should’ve won that second one without a doubt. Coming back and getting the two in today, though, that’s good for E8 conference and for in region so it’s clutch we got these two today.”
The Bombers started the weekend off with a doubleheader against Alfred University, where they split. The Blue and Gold came out strong in the first game, winning 8–2. They opened the game with a 5–0 lead after two innings and managed 14 hits in the game. Senior Caitlin Ryan had two hits and drove in two RBIs. Freshman Jennifer Biondi and Dolan also had two hits.
Senior Alyssa Brook took the hill for the Bombers and improved to 4–3 in a complete game effort. She allowed only five hits and two earned runs while striking out six.
In the second game, the Bombers seemed to lose some intensity. In the bottom of the seventh with the game tied at two with the bases loaded for the Saxons, junior shortstop Allison Greaney couldn’t come up cleanly with a ground ball, letting the game winning run score.
Despite the mishap in the field, Greaney was solid at the plate as she doubled in the first run of the game before junior Kerry Barger drove in the second run in the fifth.
Heading into Sunday’s doubleheader against Rochester Institute of Technology, the Blue and Gold were fired up as they took the first game 5–0.
Junior Allison Greaney nearly tossed a perfect game in the first matchup. She did not allow a baserunner until the fifth as she threw a one-hit shutout.
“I try to go out every game with the same mindset, same game plan just keeping batters off balance and it worked pretty well today,” Greaney said.
In the second game, the Bombers’ slugfest continued. Junior Brittany Lillie and Biondi both went yard and combined for five of the team’s seven RBIs in the 8–3 win.
“It was definitely important to get our momentum back to get a feel for the game,” Biondi said. “It’s a big game, in conference.”
The Bombers return to action at 1 p.m. Saturday as they take on St. John Fisher College in Rochester, N.Y. The team plays the next three games in Rochester as it takes on Nazareth College and the University of Rochester Sunday and Tuesday.
