Faculty and student researchers reflect on federal scientific research cuts

Driven by federal efforts to reduce government spending, cuts to federal research funding from the National Institute of Health and for the National Science Foundation have impacted faculty and student researchers. Some researchers at Ithaca College said this could limit opportunities for practical research, disrupt ongoing projects and potentially discourage future scientists from entering the field.
The Ithaca College Student Governance Council met March 17 to discuss the college’s financial future with Tim Downs, chief financial officer and vice president of finance and administration.

The U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights announced in a March 14 press release that it will be investigating over 50 colleges and universities across the country, including Ithaca College, for alleged racial discrimination.
On March 12, union bus drivers and mechanics at Tompkins Consolidated Area Transit, represented by United Auto Workers Local 2300, voted 84% in favor of authorizing a strike if it is needed in their current contract negotiation process.

Diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives are being targeted by President Donald Trump’s administration, which has led to threats of federal funding cuts and restricted programming for educational institutions across the United States. The Ithaca City School District is under investigation by the U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights after the Equal Protection Project filed a complaint against ICSD for allegedly intentionally excluding white students from a DEI event.
Beginning in Fall 2025, all incoming first-year students will pick a themed residential community to live in with other students with similar interests. There will be 11 themes to choose from, including Sustainability Central, Study Sanctuary, Naturally Adventurous and one for the LGBTQ+ community called Lavender Living.

In the 2025-26 academic year, residential life will see a significant change. All incoming first-year students will be put into themed living units to foster more community between students in residence halls.
The plans for the track were shared Feb. 3, showing a multipurpose facility to be built on Yavits Field next to Lot N. Clark Companies will begin construction in April.

Luke Keller, professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy and member of Presidential Working Group on AI, said the working group had many discussions about how the college can be conscious of the environmental impact of AI and be able to recognize when AI use violates the college’s core values.
