The field hockey team fell 2–1 to reigning Empire 8 champion Stevens Institute of Technology on Saturday in Hoboken, N.J.
At halftime, neither team had scored. The Bombers stepped it up on defense in the second half and did not allow Stevens to score until the closing minutes of the game.
In the second half, Stevens started the scoring with the team’s first goal, scored by junior midfielder Mallory Swanson from the left side of the goal. Steven’s second goal came less than a minute later when junior midfielder/ forward Jillian Price put it past sophomore goalie Kelly Singleton.
A few minutes after Stevens’ goal, the Bombers had a chance to score the equalizer on a penalty stroke. Senior defensive back Mia Muzio took the shot but it was blocked by Stevens senior goalie Ellen Griggs.
The Bombers’ only goal came on a corner play. Muzio passed the ball to freshman forward Sam English, who put it in the back of the goal for the Blue and Gold.
In the final minutes of play, the Bombers had one last chance to score, on another penalty stroke. Freshman forward Katie Kennedy took the shot but Griggs saved it again.
Stevens outshot the Bombers 30-–12. Stevens also had the advantage in corners 13–4.
Singleton had 14 saves and allowed two goals. Stevens goalie Griggs recorded seven saves and allowed one goal.
The Bombers return to action at 1 p.m. Saturday against Nazareth at Yavits Field. This will be the first Empire 8 home game for the Bombers, where the team is undefeated this season.
